This being a supplemental story to The War of the Realms, it is not absolutely necessary to read it to understand what is happening in the main book. No one could blame you for skipping out on it. You would, however, be doing yourself a big disservice if you did decide to pass on this tremendous, heartfelt singular chapter. We learn a lot of new things about the Asgardian first family in this tragic tale of negligence and overconfidence. Odin's heretofore unknown brother is a welcome addition to the whole Norse mythological canon, even if he wasn't mentioned in all the mythological tales. He is to Odin what Loki is to Thor, a pain in his godly side. The reasons why he was never mentioned are intriguing as we dwell upon his own fears and setbacks. Cul was by far the worst character of Fraction’s Thor run and Fear Itself event, possibly even the worst villain of the Heroic Age era. This, however, did not stop Jason Aaron from integrating Cul into his Thor run. He wrote Cul tremendously in Mighty Thor as he looked for redemption. In Thor 13, he finally gets it as Cul sacrifices his life for a group of Dark Elf slaves in a glorious fashion. Second half of the issue especially great

Fine on its own merits, if a bit wordy. I can't get too worked up over another grand valiant sacrifice in battle by an Asgardian, though. They never stick, and they always play out the same way, going all the way back to Skurge in Simonson's run and probably even farther. And the Kid Odin sequence really throws shade on the "One Million BC" Avengers nonsense. Even if "eons ago" is just exaggeration, this is just a reminder that Bor's reign would have been before the invention of fire. Aaron is a terrific writer but seems to have a blind spot for his own bombast.
