Spider-Woman #4 repeatedly surprises Jess as her mother piles up hard-to-swallow life-story twists. And then Octavia attacks, necessitating an awesome-looking dinosaur fight. This issue answers some questions and raises more (maybe a few too many), though it's just one chapter in a larger narrative. This book was made for Spider-Woman fans due to its thorough look at the character's origin, but it'll be remembered by the B-movie fanatic. The action is as intense as they come and about as bonkers as you could want to deliver awesome fights, impressive over-the-top moments, and all the while characterizing Spider-Woman in a strong way. Much like how Dark Nights: Death Metal has been a delight thanks to it pushing the limit, I'm starting to see that Pacheco and Prez have the chops to pull off their own event in the same vein, if Marvel will allow them. When all is said and done Spider-Woman #4 delivers a quality story, even if some responses to revelations are lacking in a little punch. This book continues to be a wild ride and has stayed true to itself thus far, and I'm totally fine with that. I love the recaps/editors notes that Karla uses. It adds depth to the story. Momma Miriam keeps Jess's head spinning with non-stop backstory revelations, and our hero remains a little behind the curve even as a rematch fight with Octavia Vermis breaks out. Jess's character is a little loopy here, but for all the right reasons. The pace remains extremely fast, and deep engagement with the title's crazy super-science questions keeps me committed even though we're coming up short of answers so far. "Karla Pacheco answering letters" is definitely one of this title's most entertaining characters. Don't skip the lettercol!
