Spider-Woman #19

Things are only going to get weirder as Jess finds herself up against a team next issue. Pacheco has given the long and winding journey of Spider-Woman a vivid structure that builds cleverly on the long, strange history of the character. That she has been able to keep every moment distinct without devolving into an amorphous mass of weird plot elements is a tremendous victory. The 19th issue is one more proof of Pacheco's talent. A tie-in that doesnt feel like a tie-in, against Veranke, the one being in the universe who has hurt Jess harder than almost anyone else has, Karla, Pere, and the rest of the gang continues to put out one of the funniest books on the market. The little Veranke mini-arc comes to a thoroughly satisfying conclusion. This takes some of this title's strongest points -- snappy banter, insanely great art, fast-paced running battles, hilarious child endangerment -- and adds on an antagonist with deep historical ties to Jess. Which is great. But it's also why I'm a little worried about the final scene reveal: I'm not super-pumped for the next set of antagonists.

That's more likely, wish more real estate was placed for this as supposed to just a few page set ups last issue. All that happened here is more interesting than the horse/twins/brother plots.

This issue is mostly just a cathartic beatdown of a really terrible villain, and... that's fun to read, honestly. I liked the snappiness of this issue, and it reminds me of what this title can be in its better moments.
