The complexity of Red Goblin #1, though, may also make this series a bit impenetrable to the casual Spider-Man reader like myself. Im vaguely aware of the circumstances around Normies current deal, but thats arguably a requirement of someone like myself who reviews comics, so I have to wonder how this lands for someone who barely knows who Carnage even is, let alone spinoff characters. Writer Alex Paknadel does his best to provide the reader context, as does the ever-stalwart recap page, but its a lot of knowledge to have going in that it could be alienating for non-completists. My expectations couldn't have been lower, but this went skyrocketing past them. It delivers a more than generous share of plot development (even for a "1.5 issues" extra-pager), sharp, clear storytelling in words and art, and fascinating developments for Normie Osborn as a character. It's even nicely self-contained--no mean feat given its convoluted continuity history. A healthy serving of memorable dialogue is the icing on the cake.

This was an interesting take on the symbiote. It's never been in the hands of a child before and the symbiote is a child as well. Their interaction is good and I like that this is juxtaposed with Norman Osborne trying to turn over a new leaf. There are some good stories that can be told here.

A pretty solid start here. This was far from perfect, but I liked what we got. Bazaldua's art isn't the best here, but I think she really shines when drawing Red Goblin. As for Paknadel's story, it's definitely interesting. I really like the concept of Normie's symbiotic being like a baby/puppy, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that develops.

Honestly this is pretty good. Nice take compared to everything else spider related that is coming out right now. Nice to see Normie getting some more character development.
