One World Under Doom #5 is an outstanding comic, both narratively and visually. More than that, it is also honest. There have been multiple instances in this series where the story has strived to make a point related to real world considerations. Here, North delivers an admission by some heroes that, based on the evidence, maybe Doom is doing the right thing for the right reasons. For a series that at times has been very blunt in its metaphor, the dialogue exchanges in this issue are essential because history proves that good people do have them in such circumstances. Plot DORMAMMU vs. The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom. The entire planet witnesses this battle and believes the Marvel heroes are working with Doom. Doctor Doom performs a final incantation, and Dormammu departs for the Dark Dimension. The fight sequences are spectacular, on a biblical scale, as is the process of saving all the victims. Thor asks the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four to analyze what's happening. They ask that Doctor Doom is possibly doing something good for the world, and that, as a king, it doesn't seem unreasonable for another king to rule a world. Iron Man and several heroes disagree, and a discussion begins about freedoms and new ways of governing. But this discussion is interrupted by Maria Hill, who tells them she knows why Doom always wins and they don't; it's a secret that will change everything, and she knows where Doom is hiding it. This event improves with each installment, offering shocking and mysterious twists. Art It's highly detailed, creating a suspenseful atmosphere that blends magic and science fiction in perfect balance with all the heroic poses. The art is as epic as the event itself. Summary Thor has doubts about this war while the world believes the heroes are allies of Doctor Doom, but a future revelation promises to change everything. more

Good read, with Dormammu defeated by Doom, the Avengers still quarrel over the idea of Doom being Emperor. Thor starts to see the reasoning of Doom being a benevolent leader for midgard (earth). Iron Man disagrees and so do most of the avengers. Thors argument however was pure logic and was hard to deny, until of course Maria Hill pops out of nowhere to tell them that SHIELD has dirt on Doom. We'll see.

I thought the choice to position Thor as the hero to challenge the others to explain why they should continue to resist Doom's rule was a smart decision. There has always been a tension in Marvel comics between the way pro-democracy rhetoric in most comics sits side-by-side by treatments of monarchy or even autocracy that present that form of rule as a legitimate and potentially even beneficial system. Kingship is presented as difficult, but not fundamentally wrong as a political regime. Tony splutters a bit when Thor puts him on the defensive—he finds it difficult to justify why monarchy ought to be rejected out of hand. This difficulty is relatable: we are not often called on to explain what the merits of democracy are in concrete t erms; because democracy has been ideologically so dominant, our reasons may amount to abstractions and clichés. It will be interesting if North can work through that difficulty not by crafting a better speech but by embedding a defense of democracy in the plot. If Doom's rule seems to be working even better than democracy, what are we not seeing that could make us reassess? more

this is much better than I have expected. I do like RB Silva's art here compared to Rise of Powers/Fall of house of X event. Plus, the writing here works for me.

I liked it just for Thor speaking some sense. I mean obviously Doom has something nefarious going on, but what if he didn't. That probably would have been a cooler idea to play with.

This was a weak issue. I really should go back and actually put in my review for the other issues, but this wasnt worth more than a skim. Art was the strongest part. It is what got 3.5 out of the 4 total points I gave. This is more or less gobblygook nonsense with character written out of character or just horribly bland. It is hard not to cheer for Doom at this point even with all his horrible downsides considering how pathetic and frankly un-heroic the heroes are written. This should have been the biggest event in the 2020s, it wont even be the biggest event this month.
