New Mutants #28 is a beautifully crafted comic. Ayala is brilliant with these types of stories, layering character beats and action adroitly. The art by Reis, Duursema, and Redmond is top-notch, selling everything they need to get across. New Mutants is never anything short of amazing, and this issue is another example of that. Magik gets the character redefining story she's needed for a long time. It's a deep story with fantastic art that puts Illyana in the place she needs to be for the future. Read Full Review

An act in three parts with some major bright spots shining through. But I wanted more and felt a bit like I only got half the story. Read Full Review

Bow down to the Queen of Limbo! It's a shame Maddie is getting swept up in Spider-Man nonsense instead of sticking with the X-verse where she belongs. And once again, thank you Vita Ayala for bringing fans such a definitive run for the New Mutants in the modern age. I have loved every single issue of this run which is very impressive as it is rare I enjoy a run on a mainstream comic this much and this consistently.

Vita Ayala's New Mutants is so consistently amazing with regards to the characters that X fans have known and loved for decades. The redemption of Madyline Pryor and liberation of Ilyana feels so beautiful, even if a little rushed. My one complaint about this issue is that it feels extremely bound to continuity in other X books. Piotr has his weird mikhail stuff going on, Ilyana's needed in X-Men, and Madyline is. Like. there's a spider-man thing happening with her? Or something? Who cares. This is great, on its own.

This is such a consistently fantastic book. This was such a great story arc with beautiful artwork that fits the tone of the writing perfectly.

Based on the previous chapters, maybe I should have been able to call the final twist here. But I didn't, and it made for a thoroughly satisfying end to the story. The art was a little sketchy and the script was a little verbose, but the neatness with which every plot thread tied up was impressive. I think the author took a few more swings at justifying Magik and Madelyne's deal than were really necessary, but with something that tricky, it's probably better to err on the side of excess clarity.

This has gone around for a bit longer than it needed to. It's stalling a bit and it needs new ideas soon.

I feel similarly to the Shadow King arc. This Limbo story started well and had some good ideas, but the journey and resolution were lackluster. Non-lineal storytelling can be really powerful; I'm not sure this was. And I'm not sure it makes any kind of sense given the original Inferno storyline.

IDK. I stayed for all the parts to this arc, but the end just felt like it went on too long! The art was super solid, but the story felt, I guess, anticlimactic is the word I am looking for. I think it may be time for me to reconsider whether to continue with NEW MUTANTS or not! :/

I really wish I liked New Mutants. It was my favorite book when it came out, but I don't find this version compelling.
