Marvel Two-In-One #1

What does this all mean for the kid who loves team-up books? Well, given what 2017 delivered for me personally, Marvel Two-In-One#1 really hits me. As Ben reaches out to Johnny, it offers hope for the future, not shucking the past, but no longer wallowing in it. I can relate to both characters, maybe more than I ever could before: Ben has a sense of duty to those gone and those surviving, amplified by the message in this comic, and Johnny, well, hes still trying to get through the grief, to learn from it, and to survive it. Marvel Two-In-One isnt a goofy, rangy, fun-before-anything-else team-up title of yesteryear. If this is the direction Marvel comics are going, then Make Mine Marvel! The story is full of emotion and action, the premise is good, the visuals are outstanding, and that Marvel Value Stamp makes my inner ten year-old ecstatic. I'll be sticking with this title if it stays at such a high level, and I'm now considering checking out the other Legacy books. Marvel, you got me. Read Full Review

Marvel Two-In-One's "The Fate of the Four" arc is a wonderful start to a new era of Fantastic Four comics, and I can't wait to see what Zdarsky has in store not only for Ben and Johnny, but hopefully for Reed, Sue, Franklin, and Val as well. Read Full Review

Last year, Infamous Iron man began what felt like the start of the return of the fantastic 4 within the Bendis controlled titles at Marvel. With his departure, it seemed as if the first family was destined to stay gone. But with Marvel Two In One continuing Bendis's hard work, Chip Zdarsky shows he's willing to do what it takes to give Marvel it's heart back. Definitely worth picking up. Read Full Review

Though certainly not perfect, as it suffers from the dreaded first issue "Mystery Box" that comic books tend to suffer from nowadays, Marvel 2-In-One #1 is ultimately a fun and affecting opening chapter in the greater Fantastic Four saga. The Fantastic Four have been absent for far too long in Marvel's comics. Marvel Two-In-One quickly makes up for lost time as it explores the lasting impact that absence is having on the remaining FF crew. This issue manages to both celebrate the legacy of Marvel's First Family and pave the way for the sort of whimsical adventure that team was always known for. This first issue is a skillfully written and beautifully drawn entry that makes you want to see more. The only remaining criticism is that Jim Cheung will not be aboard as regular artist, which will cost the book something in visual consistency. The challenge for other pencilers will be to keep the art at the level established in this issue. That's another thing that will bear watching. Read Full Review

While the Marvel Legacy lineup as a whole has been a bit hit and miss to me this may be the book above all I recommended everyone check out. The story, characters, cameos, and art all combine to make this an instant hit with that classic Fantastic Four feel. Read Full Review

In Marvel Two-in-One#1,Chip Zdarsky, Jim Cheung, John Dell, Walden Wong, and Frank Martin craft a comic that is true to the legacy of Marvel's First Family and deals with the emotional fallout of their disappearance at the end ofSecret Wars. They also set up a rocky course for the Thing and Human Torch to begin their own adventures with Dr. Doom watching from the shadows as he is still a little salty that he is not the one responsible for Reed Richards' demise. I can't say too much further about the plot without spoiling the meat and potatoes of the story, but for anyone who cares about these characters at all it's an easy sell. I was very surprised by Marvel Two-in-one #1;it is a very emotional story and hits all the beats a book about the Fantastic family needs to. Anybody complaining about Marvel not having the Fantastic Four on the roster needs to be picking this up, as it is obviously leading to some big things to come. Bringing The Thing and the Human Torch together again to hopefully bring back the Fantastic Four into the Marvel Universe has to be a good thing (and now the issues with Fox being removed, the Fantastic Four can return to past glories). To close things out, yes, most of what Marvel does is fueled by corporate mandate. The trick is finding the strong writing and art in that miasma. However, this is good storytelling completely overshadowed by the corporate mandate, and it doesnt help that it came out the same week that Marvel slaughtered a decent portion of their decently diverse book catalogue. Yes, Marvel Two-in-One #1 is a good book, but its been tainted by its purpose. I do recommend it on its merits as a comic, but its hindered by its status as a product. Read Full Review

The books spawned from Legacy have been hit or miss, but MTO has the potential to be a hit. The Fantastic Four situation needs to be addressed, and Zdarsky and Co. look like the right team for it. Hopefully a regular series is in the cards. Read Full Review

I loved this issue. I don't read much from Marvel these days as I find their books mostly unreadable, but seeing this (and hoping for an eventual FF return) prompted me to pick this up. I'm very happy that I did.

Having strayed away from comics since around Civil War I times, I came back recently to find the Marvel landscape unrecognizable and crammed with odd new characters piggy backing off the mantles of characters I loved instead of trying to create legacies of their own. While my adventure back into marvel comics was looking grim, I stumbled upon this and man was I pleased! A comic that wasn't like watching the news! Good old fashioned escapism at it's finest with surprisingly deep story telling. The focus of the fantastic four is still the strength found in family and friendship and the bond between these two (Ben and Johnny) is really growing. Can't wait to see where this goes!

We follow Ben Grimm through a star-studded meditation on the legacy and future of the Fantastic Four. It looks gorgeous and spends 18 pages Tarzanning its way from one heartstring to another in a wholly positive way. Ben Grimm is one of the easiest characters to do "heartwarming" with in the whole Marvel universe; that takes away nothing from the truly beautiful performance Chip Zdarsky puts him through here. Mr. Zdarsky's Doom is also fascinating. Where Brian Michael Bendis's Infamous Iron Doom is a hero with a villainous past, Mr. Zdarsky's Doom is a villain trying to be a hero. The difference is important. For me, it achieved that rarest and most precious of reading experiences: Stripping away decades of crusty maturity and converting me into a giddy kid again, progressing with wide-eyed passion from awesome panel to awesome panel, fully entranced. This comic is a treasure. more

Loved it! A great start! Chip Zdarsky just nailed it with his great writing and some of the dialogues in this issue were so touching. Never knew i would love the Thing as a character, this much. A few good suprises as well that keeps u excited. Cant wait for the next issue. #THIS IS HOW MARVEL COMICS SHOULD BE AND FEEL LIKE!

It's a well written story that sets up a potentially very fun series. While lacking in action, it does compensate with character development and makes the perfect launch pad for the upcoming events. The art is stunning though every pages and the colors are great. The nostalgia is strong with this one and Zdarksy knows it and uses it to its full potential. At this point, pretty much everyone hopes it ultimately turns into the full fledged return of the fantastic four, but for now, just Johnny and Ben seem like a nice team. It they can keep introducing cameos without them feeling forced and have a fast moving story, this might be a series to follow and add to you pull list for 2018.

Good issue on all points. For being a Thing spoken issue it flowed pretty well. It read really well and set up the story to come, along with filling us in about what has happened to everyone. The art is good. Cover is kinda boring. Looking forward to seeing more DOOM.

We’ve been without new adventures from The Fantastic Four since the end of “Secret Wars,” but we do get something close here. Zdarsky does a great job writing Ben Grimm, who is the star and focal point of the issue. His rapport with the other characters is really well done, and Zdarsky’s got Ben’s voice down. The pencils are by the extraordinary Jim Cheung, so this is incredible to look at. Beautiful, sentimental, well-paced issue. I’m gonna be reading the rest in a binge...

Marvel two in one ... Does that was two stories in one book at the origin ? This's more a Marvel Team-up ^^ So I liked it thank to Cheung art. Because for the story their is not much to follow. Johnny does silly thing. Thing hosting a prize. Spidey go to the prize & encounter only one member of the wreaking crew but have hard time fighting him (Dho !). Dr Doom goes to Thing brooding. I believe their last encounter in Superior didn't go well, so what the f... That do not good easer at least. Then Grimm goes to johnny doing even dumb thing. And so he is depress & have some lose of power (Well Uncanny X-men writer didn't know that). And like Snyder in metal Zdarsky inventing some stuff who DIDN'T HAPPENED ... Nice that make very sweet mom ent. But I didn't care because that didn't really happened. If marvel tried to tease the return of the FF like that, well done you fail ! A pretty empty story for now. Cover - 1/2 Love it but not close to what I read. Writing - 2/3 A little more stuff that brooding moment will be good, thanks. Arts - Cheung is do great (Even if his doom isn't and that he do to many panel without any background. 2.5/3 Feeling - I will wait more issue, but they have to make more spirit in this stuff. 1/2 more
