Magik #5

Its difficult to get a feel for any kind of coherent continuity with any character who has been around for decades. Allen has found a solid middle ground between a contemporary feel for the character and one that respects where she might have been over the decades since she made her first appearance. The full reality of Illyana and her inner conflict hasnt ever really been given the kind of connection that it really should have had over the years. Given the right momentum, Magik could turn into one of the more popular Marvel characers. Allen certainly seems to be taking her in a direction where she might yet live-up to that potential. For a 27 page comic book, there was so much substance in the fifth installment. The showdown with Liminal, the tension between Illyana and Darkchild finally reaches a breaking point, Cal, even Illyana getting a motivational talking to by Cyclops. I think I initially thought this was a limited series, but this is just the conclusion of the first arc. Which is fine, I like Illyana, and I'm hopeful the next arc finds a better fit for the story. I enjoyed the final pages here with her back in Alaska with her team and just having some quiet non-verbal time with Scott because the two go back forever at this point. It's a moment that shows a good bond between the two that feels honest and both mentorly and brotherly on Scott's side since he's trying to do right by her. The book does most things pretty well overall, but it's just by the numbers for the most part. Liminal feels like a placeholder that could find better use in the future, while the use of Cal was just another body in the story. Dani's turn added some nice moments to it and helped to give it a bit more history and depth throughout it, but I wish in the end we had just a bit more time with the fight/discussion between Illyana and Darkchylde to get a better handle on what's Read Full Review

Issue 5 brings a little of everything. Cool action, high stakes, character development, emotion, and a bittersweet ending. Poor Illyana. She cares so much. Her friends and family almost never truly understand her or are capable of being there for her when she needs them. The only exceptions are Cyclops and Dr. Strange, the former of whom has a nice scene at the end. This was a great conclusion to the first arc of this series.

and that's the first arc folks! I was anticipating that that maybe Ashley Allen was going to split Illyana and Darkchild for good by the end of this story. Then, I thought "no way. that's literally what makes her who she is". So, my guess was that she was going to keep it or at least hold the status quo. In the end, Allen still managed to surprise me by having Magil and Darkchild reconcile voluntarily. That was pretty cool and the visuals by Peralta and Hesli made this even more fun and enjoyable that it would've sounded on writing alone. I hope people see that Liminal ended up being a cautionary tale for people who follow the powerful in a blindly matter. These mages like the Fire Demon and Gravity ended up being sacrificial lambs for the leader they were serving. There's no loyalty nor consideration trickling from the top on down. The thing is they didn't necessarily fail all the way; they fell short at the finish line. And what was their rewards for all they did? They got to be part of the sacrificial ritual for their boss. BY part I mean they were also sacrificed. Beautiful metaphor there, I hope I don't go over people's head. I'm looking forward to the next arc on this seeries. more

This solo series is surprisingly successful so far. Bringing in Mirage of course helps, although it's not fair for her to be second fiddle in any book. I like the developing friendship between Scott and Illyana, especially since they weren't originally peers. Would like to see more friendships develop between the original New Mutants and X-Men of their era, particularly as they're all adults now.

I have no idea why their pushing this mini-series to 8 Issues. They did the same for the Namor series. It felt dragged out by that time. The storyline here is flimsy at best. The most endearing parts of this series has been the relationship between Magik and Dani and her internal struggle with Darkchilde. That was easily the best part of this issue.
