Whats actually kind of cool about all of this is that there really is very little humor in the first issue. One might not expect humorlessness to be all that appealing, but theres just enough of it around the edges of the action to keep her overall stature heroic in a beautifully roguish kind of way that should serve the center of a series quite well. The character created by Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema back in the early 1980s has always had a great deal of potential as a leading lady. That said, there is still plenty to enjoy, particularly in the art department. German Peralta nails both the action and quieter moments with his dynamic style and thoughtful character designs. Arthur Heslis colors really pop, especially in the Limbo-centric flashback sequences. This is a really nice looking book with a style that matches the current crop of X-books while standing out on its own, much like the books star herself. Magikis another solid entry in the post-Krakoa era and a great introduction to a character who has been through so much but too often gets sidelined or exploited as the hot, goth teleporter with the big sword. With her badassery, traumatic past, and connection magic and demon dimensions, Magik is an objectively cool comic book character. However, Magik #1 lacks a hook and supporting cast to let her spotlight shine going for recycled versions of supernatural/fantasy/horror hits of the past instead of something fresh and easy to latch onto. First off, this is the best Magik has been written in years. Writer Ashley Allen gets the character much better than so many recent writers. The set up of her inner struggles and her Darkchild persona is very well-handled and finally makes the Darkchild relevant and a threat again. The art from German Peralta is absolutely stunning and perfectly fits the dark, supernatural tone of the book The big action scene is tense and exciting thanks to both the art and the writing. The new Demon Crow villain makes a strong first impression, and Magik actually struggles realistically against his unique tactics instead of being presented as all-powerful. She also actually uses some spells, as opposed to most writers who refuse to let her use m agic despite that literally being her name. For a first issue, Magik #1 is close to perfect. It sets up the main character and the first arc masterfully and is just a compelling read in its own right. Full marks. more

I was worried about this issue as most X-Men solo books are crap. I was also worried that this might be a feminist book. Thankfully neither was true. I thought it held pretty closely to the Magik character and Ashley apparently respects her. The chicken feet on the villain were a bit weird. Other than that, I thought it was a good start. I'm so glad I picked this up! I been trying to follow Magik since her One-Shot during Blood Hunt and this definitely did not disappoint. The concept of Magic wielding mutants is somewhat foreign to me. But it's even more appealing when you add demons from hell. I'm pretty invested on learning more X Lore, and Magik is one my focuses at this time. The art in this issue was insanely good! If I was to imagine a comic with magic, mutants and demons it wouldn't look as good as this one does!

A solid start, in my opinion. First and foremost, Peralta's art is really nice throughout this, and I think it fits in very well with the plot and overall tone. As for the story, it's interesting enough. I do think Cal reluctantly aligning with Magik was a little compressed, as was his whole secret family backstory coming out, but I think Allen has a pretty good voice for Magik that I would like to see more of.

Not really knowing much about this character I gave this a try and enjoyed it. Like other reviewers on here I feel the same that her design in this ish is bland. But the design on ish 2 looks phenomenal so hopefully it changes. Story was nothing amazing but kind of cookie-cutter anime vibes,for me it specifically took inspiration from Bleach. Her Darkchilde trying to take over is very much like Ichigo Kurosaki' Hollow that is always trying to take him over. Her sword and fighting demons make me think of this sorry can't help it!

A decent Magik story. The family of magic practitioners introduced in this issue was the most interesting part for me. Just for the record: I hate Magik’s look, both the costume and the surfboard-sized sword. I hope the different outfits on upcoming covers mean that a costume change is in store for Ilyana.

Totally agree the costume is a bit too basic, not too iconic. The big sword is dumb probably to appeal to the manga crowd (I would know use to be into anime lol). Big swords are dumb in comics especially lately I mean did you see that Iron Man cover recently he's got a big sword and it just looks so stupid...

Not following Iron Man. I'm mostly an X-guy. Illyana used to be a favorite of mine, but her story ended with Inferno, if you ask me.

Just read this ish today and I actually liked it! Sure it was a bit predictable, but the dialogue was not too bad. Whoever drew this too was definitely inspired by the Bleach manga/anime and even if not I definitely get those vibes from it so I like it even more for that. At the end I saw preview for ish 2 and gotta say I hope they use that design for Ilyana it looks waaay better than this one!
