Doctor Doom didn't expect his reformed stint as Iron Man to be easy, however I'm willing to bet Doom didn't see his mother coming back to haunt him as one of those obstacles. What does Cynthia want, and how is it tied to Reed Richards and his eternal feud with Victor von Doom? Infamous Iron Man #5 offers no answers, only plenty of questions. Worth a look. While the color work does earn this book some extra points, what deserves the most credit in this issue is the ending. Now, while the ending isn't a cliffhanger per se, it is a bit of a jaw-dropper. Some of you may have already put together the big reveal at the end, but for those of you who haven't, it's a nice a surprise. And while I'm not about to spoil it here, I will say that the ending gives me hope for the future of the series. I have a feeling that things are about to get a whole lot worse for Victor. This was a fascinating issue with a narrative framework I really liked, picking up on last issue from the perspective of Ben Grimm. The dialogue has been strong for this whole series, and that continues here, giving us more insight into what drives the sort-of reformed Doom. The action scenes where Victor attacks his mother with magic are beautifully rendered here, as Alex Maleev and Matt Hollingsworth do great work. Adding a bit to my grade was the ending, a serious wtf moment for me that, at the same time, invested me in this series all the more.

Doom's tense meeting with Mommy is gussied up with a few other scenes and a big twist. Without spoiling it, I can say that Mr. Bendis has picked the perfect nemesis for Iron Doom. This series looks to be headed for exciting places in the near future. This issue was highly satisfying, though it probably isn't a good pick as evidence in the case for Alex Maleev as a great artist. Rather underwhelming visuals.
