Strong writing keeps us interested in everything that's said, and a large team of guest artists adds visual novelty to the multiple stories that are being told. Although this issue is short on superheroic action, it doesn't come close to disappointing. Overall, this just felt like a messy issue and at all in tone with the amazing previous issues. One of the many standout points of this series is the time the plot takes to marinate and develop so that when there are big reveals it lands with a massive amount of gravitas. Sadly, Immortal Hulk #42 suffers from too many contrasting art styles and a lack of balance within the plot. Way early in the series, the One Below All enters Brian and controls him. A couple issues back, the Leader basically eats Brian, and unknowingly the One Below All as well. Now the One Below All is controlling the Leader. I hope I’m understanding this right 😭😭

Bad news everywhere: Gyrich fires Gamma Flight, Jackie quits her job, and even the Leader is having trouble with his Gamma-manipulating schemes. Going for multiple artists is a good idea with this collection of wide-spread "check-in" scenes. The different styles keep all the conversations fresh. Of course, it helps that the character and plot developments are, as ever, fascinating.

It feels like its starting to get to the home stretch of this run and this issue is kind of setting the players that have been in it so far into the endgame. At least it feels that way. Very well done.
