Ghost-Spider #10

McGuire and Guara put together a very, very engrossing issue here that tells its own story while fitting into an engrossing ongoing saga. Somewhere in the midst of everything else, McGuire is giving Gwen a much more gradual and nuanced walk with her version of the black costume than Spider-Mans editors allowed themselves back in the mid-1980s. In addition to everything else, its that much more satisfying to see Gwen going through some of what Peter did decades ago with the singularity of vision afforded a single author.  Read Full Review

Fortunately, even though this volume is finished this world is not. McGuire has more in store for Gwen and her supporting cast. While the future is uncertain for when and what comes next, Ghost-Spider delivers a successful final issue that gives fans something to look forward to and new readers something to invest in. While it is sad to discover that Ghost-Spider #10 is the final issue of this series Seanan McGuire and Ig Guara delivered an impactful conclusion. McGuire was able to flesh out the origin story of Earth-65 Sue and Johnny Storm in a way that amplified the story they have been telling with Gwen Stacy. The results was a final issue that set up several storylines for Gwen Stacy to be a major part of while building towards the return of a new Spider-Gwen or Ghost-Spider series. Read Full Review

I liked turns in this story, but it felt rushed at the very end. Another issue or two might have helped develop things, but even as it stands it's got enough here to satisfy longtime Gwen fans. Read Full Review

Before the end, the comic does offer some nice final father/daughter moments as well as some background to the Storms, their origin of their powers, and what befell poor Doctor Doom for helping them. The selfish duo appear to want to be heroes, but from these glimpses, and their behavior towards Gwen, you have to wonder if that's possible. Read Full Review

Ghost-Spider has/had potential, given where Seanan McGuire started this series and how the new series was pitched, Gwen should have made a permanent move to Earth 616 to attend college, made new friends and deal with her angry thoughts towards the new C.R.A.D.L.E. law. We may never see that story, but let's be honest with ourselves, Ghost-Spider will most likely be rebooted soon, and given a a seventh shot with another writer. Read Full Review

I'd rate at least a point higher if this wasn't a surprise cancellation. So disappointing! It's particularly unfortunate that the current state of the plot makes Gwen's withdrawal from Earth-65 look like an all-out retreat.

This was a surprise cancelation, or at least I think it was canceled. The Maker is mentioned in the solicitation and yet he doesn't appear. Nothing is really wrapped up and we're going to have to wait for the next Ghost-Spider series to find out where this is headed. I'm interested in seeing that, honestly. But it kinda sucks since I feel like Seanan McGuire's run had a lot of potential. I thought these last few issues, in fact this whole half of her run, was mostly setting things up, and now it's over. I don't know why, I guess sales weren't there. I hope whoever comes next is a good writer too and Ghost-Spider can last a lot longer and we don't keep getting more volumes to tell this story. I'll miss the character while she's gone and that 's saying a lot for the variant cover that she was conceived as. more
