In a lot ways, this is the book that I feel DC wishes their Catwoman book was; a character based on the thrill of the chase, out for fun instead of a character mourning the loss of a fiance that she herself left. I haven't been this fired up by a hero book from Marvel Comics in a long time. The stories are fun and thrilling, the characters honor their past iterations while charting new paths, the visuals are phenomenal, the colors vivid, and the letters just flat out cool. Black Cat #1 is a fun read for fans of the character. It does an excellent job of building upon recent events while also being accessible. The introduction of new characters and the continuation of other stories allow for the ability to go in several different directions. I really liked this number one and Black Cat is now on my pull list. The combination of action, intrigue, and humor was really well paced and the art was a highlight as well. The issue is light and fun, especially early on as Felicia turns the security guards own hyper-vigilance against them allowing her henchmen to commit the theft while they provide her with the perfect alibi. The best moment of the comic, however, comes from neither from the main story nor the Black Fox back-up tale but from the other short back-up story involving the Black Cat and her pets robbing a jewelry store. Black Cat #1 was a good example as to why Felicia Hardy is more than ready to lead her own solo series. Jed Mackay showed what makes Black Cat a standout character and was able to build a world around her that you'll want to come back to see how it moves forward. I wanted to like Black Cat #1, because I think Felicia Hardy can be more than just a Catwoman knock off. This ain’t it. The story is bland and does nothing to persuade any reader to keep going, and the coloring is distractingly shallow. Rather than reading this, fans of Hardy will undoubtedly have a better time if they just wait for her to show up in the pages of Spider-Man again. Spend your time and money elsewhere. Black Cat gets back to her core business: Heisting like crazy with bags of elan. She's got a posse, an antagonist, and a mentor laying groundwork toward a heck of an "One Last Heist" caper. The C strip provides a tantalizing hint of the mentor/mentee relationship. While I admit the art could be sharpened up all around, it struck me as well above average. It's certainly tied tight to the script and stocked with meaningful details. This whole package has a subtle, sneaky depth to it -- a puzzlebox of a comic with tons of potential.

I liked this. I wish the art for the main story was better, but I thought the writing was mostly solid. I will say, however, that the third story about the Black Fox was easily my favorite story, which may be bad because that story doesn't even feature the title character. It's the same writer though, so I have some faith. The second story by Nao Fuji was completely throwaway, but it didn't harm anything, I guess.

I see why this book is banking on variant covers to stay afloat. If you thought Catwoman's art was too good, Selina is too old, too respectable... and not ditzy enough - well, do I have the book for you. If you really must read something with Black Cat, skip this and instead pick up the .HU issue of Hunted that stars Black Cat. That did a much better job of telling an engaging story and presenting Felicia as a relatable character.
