Despite the let down of the art, I still recommend picking up this book. Ahmed story is clever enough to stand on it's own merit. The subject is clearly chosen to get people more excited about the upcoming Venom movie. Oof. I really hope this was just a fluke, because I want to read a good Miles Morales book again. Even $3.99 would be too high a price of admission for a story that just feels so meaningless, with no convincing character interactions to make up for its narrative. It ain’t eye candy, either. It’s not god awful, but… No matter how much you like Spider-Man’s black suit, or the symbiote, or annuals or whatever, you likely won’t be happy with this book. Skip it. Read Full Review

The idea of prequels is to bring something new to the table, while keeping the story familiar. This does that. It focuses how much Venom actually cared for Spider-Man, what it thought and why it did what it did. And why it started to hate Spidey so much. Great writing and flashback-ish artwork.

Very nice throwback to one of my favourite era's of Spider-Man. Great artwork that really fits the mood of the story.

A nifty untold story that slides into the time after the alien costume but before Peter found out it was alive: The symbiote sleep-walks him through some brutal crime-fighting and picks up a few important lessons from a bold bystander. The premise is sound and the writing is - barring an unpleasant reliance on the word "meat" - enjoyable. The layouts are amazing but the finish on the art is too sketchy for me. The comic is good as it is but it could be more than good if it had more visual polish. Well, maybe. Would it be even stronger without the last two pages? The main body's very focused on learning the value of mercy; the end pivots into betrayal of trust. That rounds out the historic plot, but it weakens the overall theme, doesn't it? more

Art by Garry Brown was cool. Plotidea was neat, but the dialogue a bit forced/stiff. They're doing the "Let's call each other Cat and Spider"-thing that drove me nuts in Batman #50? Is this a virus?!?!

This feels like a story we have been told before and doesn't really offer new insight into anything. The art went back and forth between being tremendous and barfmendous.

It's an old story from a new perspective that we never got to see. We see that the symbiote wasn't some horrible creature that preyed on Peter, like it was portrayed. That's the new insight, the terror and betrayal and loss that the symbiote went through when everyone, Peter, Mr. Fantastic, and the readers, considered it a threat.
