Amazing Spider-Man #43

With Amazing Spider-Man #43, Spencer and Ottley deliver an incredibly wholesome experience that builds upon the last issue's momentum. It may tie in into a larger story, but it doesn't need to, as it feels completely satisfying all on its own. This team is magic, and the issues they work on together reflect that. In the end, these are just quibbles that do little to detract from the overall quality and enjoyment of this issue. Amazing Spider-Man #43 caps off a successful reintroduction of one of Spider-Mans little-known foes with a conclusion that will make even the coldest of hearts melt. While this series has had its fair share of ups and downs, Spencer and Ottley are hitting their stride. Amazing Spider-Man #43 was a mixed bag of an ending for this "True Companions" story arc. On one hand Nick Spencer created a touching conclusion to the storyline around Gog's character. But on the other hand, Spencer completely dropped the ball with the Boomerang and Lifeline Tablet storyline. Because of that Amazing Spider-Man #43 ended up coming across as half-complete when all was said and done. Read Full Review

This is a good looking book, but ultimately a long-winded way of adding a silly element into Spider-Man and Boomerang's life. This issue, and the series as a whole, reads like it's meandering and untethered from a greater purpose or direction. Here's to hoping the series gets back on track after its first great arc and gives us some answers about Kindred before it's far too late. Read Full Review

While a bit rushed, I liked it a lot. The ending was bitterwseet and changes the dynamic a bit. Also, Boomerang's line: "LATER SUCKERS! (not you Spidey, you're cool)" just shows how much development he got during this series. And I love it.

I'm so excited that this title is back. This has been one of my favorites since it began. And while I'm sure next issue will be this run in its top form (as all Kindred issues have been), this issue is kind of unfortunate due to the context in which it's been released. How could Nick Spencer and co. know that comics would stop for almost two months? This issue, kinda like last issue, would have done more for me in the timeline where the US didn't have such incompetent leaders. But the hype that I built up for myself because of the delays and my somewhat childish attachment to comics just couldn't be beaten by this more emotional, small wrap up. Of course, it didn't help that the solicitation made the issue sound like it was essential. It is ... if you want to know what happens next in the sequential continuity of Nick Spencer's run, but it's not like what I'm just going to assume next issue is like. Or issue 24, or issue 29. This is like... an issue 15. The next big thing is coming and we need to wrap up the cloned Ned Leeds of it all. I say all this despite not disliking the issue. I really enjoyed it, for what it was. But the slight disappointment is not something I can ignore, much like last issue. And it's unfair so I'm not going to let it tank the score. So, the issue itself... I have two points of contention. One, the Lifeline tablet is around but we never really get a wrap up to that. It's not even really mentioned after a certain point. I assume Spidey and Boomerang ended up with all the pieces and Kingpin lost his groove, but it's not explained. Maybe it'll play a role in the next story... But this title likes to take its time and keep its focus sharp, so I can't count on that. Two, what happened to the art in those last few pages? I thought for a second that Ryan Ottley just ran out of time, but I checked this comic's trusty credits page, and it turns out Ottley inked some of this issue. I'm willing to bet those last few pages were Ottley inking his own work. The linework is too sharp and scribbly. It really does his art no favors, and that's a shame because I usually like his art. It was distracting, and I hope Cliff Rathburn, Ottley's normal inker, is back on with whatever Ottley's next issue is. This isn't a bad issue, not at all, it just suffers from a bit of loose plotting and loose inking, and it couldn't have picked a worse context in which to come out. more

This issue of Amazing Spider-Man was not as strong as last week's, however, it was still a great issue all around. The story continues right where it left off in the last issue, with spidey and boomerang caught in the middle of gog. The end of this issue was unexpected and has me interested to see what happens next. Also, the issue features some welcome light-heartedness, as opposed to the influx of kindred drama in recent issues.

This is one of those "funny" Spider-Man issues. I laughed at Spidey webbing The Kingpin's mouth shut, The game of fetch that stopped Gog's rampage and I was glad to see he's found a new home. I think he shows potential as part of Peter's and Spider-Man's lives. And he has a chance to develop as a real character and not just an occasional menace. I also enjoyed getting a break from the overly long-lived mystery of Kindred. Just reveal who he is, how Peter's life "will never be the same" and wrap it up, will you? At least in the 5-year-long Hobgoblin mystery of the '80s he menaced Spidey in person, not just from the shadows. All-in-all this was a pretty good issue and "True Companions" was a good story. Impeach Fisk!

Against all odds, Boomerang is instrumental in saving New York from Gog. This finale manages to hang onto the sweetness generated in the last issue and stick the landing in a way that both progresses the plot and tugs at the heartstrings. This is the level of quality ASM should always be aiming for.

Its not anything too crazy or groundbreaking and I'm not sure still whats going on with the tablet but that gog is something else. Great character and I hope to see him around more now that hes the new pet.

First comic I have read since lockdown and what a disappointment. Surprisingly it feels rushed. Typical Spencer where somehow he seems to think that Boomerang is an essential Spiderman supporting character.
