Wytches: Bad Egg Halloween Special #1

Overall, Bad Egg was amazing. I loved it as much as I did the first volume of Wytches. In the back of the issue, Snyder wrote a letter and talked about how his fears had changed since he wrote the first volume, and you can definitely see that in how the story deals with kids. As a Wytches fan, I am so excited to be back in this world and this is a fantastic start to whatever the creative team as in store. Snyder's letter to fans at the start and finish of the story show his and the entire team's passion for this story. That passion shows in the product. As a standalone story I couldnt possibly have wished for better than what has been delivered here. If this is truly a prequel to the next volume then I cannot wait to see what Snyder, Jock & Hollingsworth have in store for us, but I know its going to be epic! The biggest drawback from this issue that it's not long enough. It gives us a taste and makes you want more. The fact that I'm reviewing a Halloween special on Christmas should let you know how far behind I am.  Last week I reviewed Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour #1 and I made the statement that I'm not a fan of witches in general. I wasn't scared of the wicked witch or the Blair witch, my god the witches in Wytches are horrifying.  Sebastian Clay and Jackson Isbelle are best friends and somewhat outcasts at school. What Jackson doesn't know is that Sebastian is descended from a line of Witch Hunters. Jackson's family is the mark and Sebastian has been tasked with killing his entire family as they are responsible for starting new "Burrows" for baby Wytches.  Jackson's family are planning on sacrificing him in o rder to feed the baby Wytche which puts leaves Sebastian with the dilemma of whether to tell Jackson his potential fate or to proceed with the plan and not get too attached to the loyalty he feels to his friend.   Wytches is an exceptional read and works on multiple levels. As a horror story its one of the best I've read in recent memory. Even in a vacuum, Wytches is an amazing narrative with very few flaws. The premise is a unique take on witches and warlocks and the art is moody and atmospheric. I recently reviewed The Batman who Laughs: #1 which also features the same creative team of Snyder & Jock. I wasn't a fan of Jocks Batman but I absolutely adore his art in this issue.  The pacing for the story is brisk with a new twist every few pages to keep you on your toes. There a ton of Oh Shit moments throughout and all of the turns culminate in one of the most satisfying conclusions I've read in recent memory. This is a huge special but its entirely self-contained, beginning, middle, and end.  This story also illustrates how constraining the Big Two publishers must be to a creator. I know Snyder primarily as a batman writer but in a series like this one or A.D. After Death, he really is able to display his abilities as a writer. The man is a huge talent and one of the best active writers in the industry right now.  Wytches was 7.99 which is well above the industry standard for a single issue. I normally don't support overpriced books but in this instance, Wytches is totally worth it. It's an 80-page comic. The story is amazing and the art is inspired. Wytches is part of an overarching narrative but works totally standalone. I'd be very surprised if Wytches isn't adapted into another medium within the next 5 years. Collects all 12 of the short chapters from Image+ and adds an ending. It's every bit as creepy and thoughtful as the first arc was. You can pick it up and jump right in, the first arc is not required reading, the story is self-contained but with the promise of a little future relevance. Scott Snyder also provided a captivating essay in the back explaining his inspiration and the underlying theme.

The art is as gorgeous as ever, Jock delivering on the expectations. The characters are nice, but the brilliance has to go to the camaraderie between the two protagonists. It doesn't seem forced, nor weird, it's amazing. As for the horror aspect of it, I must say I think it's even more terrific than what I felt in the original series. Snyder really did raised the stakes even higher with this piece. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed this book. Snyder’s at his best when he writes horror. A nice cohesive story, unlike most of his superhero work haha

Now this, this was great. It is so good to return to the scary world of Wytches and to learn that the second arc is finally on its way. Scott Snyder proves here that he is doing his best work in spooky, horror-esque setting and Jock's art wonderfully adds to the eerie atmosphere. The new character, Sebastian Clay, seems to be a resourceful young fella and I'm interested to see what he'll bring to the story in the next chapter. Pledged is pledged. I think it's high time to reread volume first.
