David Pepose gives us a wonderful origin story that reveals how Space Ghost first meets Jace, Jan and Blip and winds up being a guardian figure for them. However, this version of events is somewhat more edgier and updated for today's audiences. The death of Jace and Jens father at the start of the book is particularly jarring. Overall, Space Ghost #1 proves to be an excellent issue. Although they took it in a more serious direction from the more lighthearted cartoon its based it, it is clear that the writer and artists are honoring the cartoon, as opposed to mocking it. Fans of the Space Ghost cartoon who are interested in a more gritty take on the character with more serious plotlines will love this story. Its packed with action and emotional depth, just in the first issue, so that is hopefully a good indication of what future issues will offer. Space Ghost #1 is a debut that feels much more like a sci-fi Batman as our hero is glimpsed almost like a ghost than man. Pepose also makes him fallible, giving us moments where he falters a bit and we don't know how exactly he'll get out of the situation. As a kid of the 90’s, my first (& only) exposure to Space Ghost was through the Cartoon Network series Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. My parents told me that it was a far cry from the Space Ghost they grew up with, but I was never introduced further to the character they remembered. So I was super excited to see the character getting a new series from Dynamite which would pay homage to the classic Hannah-Barbera version of Space Ghost I had heard so much about. I was also pumped to hear David Pepose was attached to it, as I loved his recent Punisher miniseries at Marvel. This first issue exceeded my expectations in every way possible, packing it’s 20+ pages with action, intrigue, suspense, & heart. Pepose's was a perfect choice for thi s story as his writing is so accessible to readers like me, who may not be familiar with this version of Space Ghost. Some of my favorite parts of the book were his dialogue for Jan & Jace, the adolescent siblings I wasn’t expected to love as much as I Pepose made me. The art by Jonathan Lau & colors by Andrew Dalhouse perfectly capture the space epic tone, offering just enough elements to give the book a touch of nostalgia without making you feel like you're picking up a 50-year old comic book. I loved the details for character designs & facial expressions, particularly the adorable Blip, and the action sequences leap off the pages. Taylor Esposito's top-notch lettering adds depth & polish to the visuals for a complete package. Space Ghost #1 is a thrilling revival for a classic character, offering a fresh start while honoring the original spirit. I finally feel like I understand what my parents were talking about all those years ago & I can’t wait to share this with them. more

Plot This first comic begins with the brutal attack on the planet Omicron by pirates led by Brak, who are searching for a new technology created by Dr. Jerrod Keplar. Keplar's children, Jan and Jace, accompanied by the ape mascot Blip, try to escape from these attackers, but when they lose hope of saving themselves, SPACE GHOST appears, who, using the technology of his bracelets, easily defeats them. But even Space Ghost is going to need help to repel this invasion, help that Jan and Jace are willing to provide. The action sequences are intense and show how powerful this character is. Exciting first chapter that does not focus on revealing the origin of this vigilante, which is a mix between the Lone Ranger and Star Wars with a dizzying/mesmerizing narrative pace by David Pepose. As a fan of this original animated series from Hanna-Barbera, as well as the famous Late Night Show of the 1990s on Cartoon Network, it is exciting to see how they take the classic elements of this character and extrapolate them with a minimalist and precise vision. Now this is what a comic should be. Good old fashioned action and adventure with high stakes and interesting characters, hero and villain. This is easily the best new comic I've gotten this year. I remember seeing old Space Ghost cartoons as a kid and enjoying them and shuddering at the disgrace they made of him in the '90s on the coast to coast show. A comic like this will help shed that dim-witted image that series gave him. So will the return of his old cartoons on the upcoming MeTV Toons channel. I'm looking forward to it. I'm also looking forward to seeing how this promising series develops. Dynamite has a habit of ending series at 12 or less issues though so maybe I'd better not get too hyped. But in a time when Marvel and DC are bo th all but dead to me and I need something to fill that void. And this series seems to have what I'm looking for. It's easily the best comic I've seen outside the Skybound Energon Universe. I really hope it lasts so we can still have some good comics when they're needed most. more

This was better than it had any right to be. Really liked the art, the action and the paneling here. Feels very old school but also modern, which is exactly what this book should go for. The art looks drawn traditionally and they update some of the designs to fit a more "realistic" and serious approach to the character but again it feels recognizable. The story is simple and straightforward but sets up room for expansion and many adventures. Wish this was longer.

With the territories of the Galactic Federation spread far and wide across the vastness of space, pirates and hijackers ransack the distant colonies with cruel disregard for the innocent scientists living within them. Yet there is a cosmic vigilante who metes out justice throughout the galaxy, bringing vengeance to those prey upon the defenceless. Some say he is a policeman who has abandoned the strictures of the law. Others say he is a phantom, the sole survivor of a war-torn planet. And those who have survived his wrath claim he is more a force of nature, able to bend the very elements of Creation to decimate his enemies. Thoughts… I had no knowledge of Space Ghost or the setting going into this comic, I now know it's based off a 60s cartoon series but this comic has really brought this up to the modern day in its tone and feel. This very quickly throws us into the story, all hell has broken loose and things look very bad for those on the space station under attack. This is has a full on space opera feel from the start, and as the issue continues everything seems so big and bold. This has both drama and action in equal measures. There is a lot of tension in the pages and a real sense of danger for the characters that we are introduced to. I am not sure how these characters fit into the previous version of the story but that lack of knowing helped to elevate an already tense situation in the pages. Space Ghost himself seemed to be quite an imposing character, a sort of mix between Superman and Batman all wrapped into one on first impression, will see how that holds up as the series continues. Artwise this is really great, there are some great character designs throughout, some really strange and cool looking alien creatures. The first reveal of Space Ghost is a simple but striking image, definitely setting a good tone for the character. I like the style, everything has a quite realistic look to it and there are some really stand out panels in the issue. I went into this issue with no preconceptions or hype for the character and I think for me that really helped me enjoy the issue more. I found myself drawn into the whole thing really quickly and I really enjoyed it. I liked the tone and the setting and Space Ghost seems to be an intriguing character, I will definitely be reading the series ongoing. I would give this 8 out of 10, definitely worth checking it out if you are in two minds about picking it up. more

Simple and harmless, this is perhaps the dullest way to go about reviving this IP. Humor? Self-awareness? No. Some expansion on the storytelling or characterization to make it interesting for modern audiences? No. This comic just takes the OG Space Ghost and plays it completely straight with dialogue that might be sort of throwback or it might just be bad. The art is fine but does nothing with the potential that the zany setting offers. Striking visuals could almost carry a book like this, and the goofy weirdness of the times opens the door for that, but there's nothing remotely ambitious or imaginative here. This comic isn't egregiously bad, it's just bland and a little irksome because there probably are ways to make Space Ghost interestin g and relevant, but this isn't it. more

An incredibly safe start for Space Ghost. It seems like this is all Space Ghost really needs, as I've seen a lot of people go, 'Oh, look, it's Space Ghost!' and pick it up immediately. It's interesting how many people easily forget about Space Ghost and how they seem to have only fond memories of him once something jolts their memories. Don't let the 6 rating fool you. The team behind this one delivers a solid comic book experience. The artwork is good, and the writing is OK. The issue introduces our caped hero, Jan, Jace, Blip, and a small cast of familiar villains. But it is so very, very safe, with SG saving the kids in a milquetoast and unabashed, by the numbers manner. The writing goes smoothly but automatically and very much uninspire d. However, this is just the first issue, maybe they're just warming up. I'll pick up the second issue and see. more

I read this issue because I wanted to know what the hype was all about and, well... I don't see it. There are definitely worse books than Space Ghost, but to be honest, neither the story nor the art are doing it for me. The writing is solid, but I found nothing in it that makes me want to come back for more. The art is not quite on a professional level, in my opinion. Lau does have a knack for visual storytelling, but the linework is very scribbly and the faces look weird. He is going for a realistic style, but it just lacks in certain areas. Overall, I'm not a fan of this grittier, more realistic take on Space Ghost. I read some of the older books and they looked better and were more fun.
