Young Justice #9

This is an excellent issue that stands alone as a well-written origin for Keli. I really hope DC does more with her after this run ends, she's certainly my favorite of the cast at the moment. The art is also phenomenal; definitely some top-notch work here. Read Full Review

The artwork in this issue is also fantastic. From the set pieces in Teen Lantern's backstory, to the chaos on Earth 3, both Araujo and Timms lend their talents expertly. I especially love the panels with Keli and Iorl, their facial expressions were brilliant! All of the scenes with Teen Lantern trying to figure out what's going on on Earth 3 are gorgeous. The issue has a really nice flow to it, and I really loved we're getting the detail I feel has been sorely lacking from this series. A certain depth has been added as the tension and danger feel genuine, as opposed to the earlier issues. Arajo's art stole the show in Young Justice #9and I hope we get to see more of it. This is an interesting installment in the multiversal odyssey arc in spite of some problems. I wasn't happy about the complete absence of two YJ members, but the portrayal of Teen Lantern and the interaction with Earth-3 villains and Batwoman still made for a solid, entertaining story. One consistent knock on Bendis' scripts is too often the characters' unique voices become blurred and everyone sounds alike. It would be easy to swap out Jinny Hex in this setting and not notice any changes to how she speaks vs. Keli. With a team of such unique personalities, Bendis hasn't established them — particularly the three new members of the team — as individual characters. Read Full Review

Teen Lantern's background has explored this issue and while there are seeds thrown in here that may become interesting in the future in dealing with her backpack and power gauntlet.... Keli Quintela kind of came off a little less interesting than she previously seemed.  Beyond that though, Bendis continues to know nothing about Earth-3, but at least we have some decent art this issue to try and mask that aspect.   Read Full Review

Bendis sure took his sweet time to start developing Teen Lantern, and this issue was really, and I mean REALLY needed. When you have a cast so big, diverse and in a solid percent built on new characters, you need to properly introduce every single one of them to the audiences. I think it's a wonderful idea to hve a non American character for a change, especially one who kinda possesses powers of a Green Lantern, but is not really one of them. That's a decent backstory, and sure, it could be better, but then again, it could have also been much worse. Bottomline, Keli is cool, and has potential to grow as a character, maybe earn a real ring after some time, in distant future. I hope Bendis will turn the series to be more character drive n, like this issue, instead of universe jumping shenanigans I hardly care about, especially when other writers did it better in other series. more

I think I'm going to be dropping this comic soon. I'm just not that impressed by or interested in most of the characters. Teen Lantern is boring. I've never liked that knock off Wonder Girl character Cassie. To me Donna Troy is Wonder Girl. Jenny Hex is rather a lame character so far and Amethyst was a stupid character from her beginnings back when she first appeared in comics. Plus I'm sure Spoiler will be on the team once they are back home and I never liked her. Impulse I both like and dislike. Sometimes he's a bit to much and I just wish someone would hit him. Other times he's funny as hell. So that basically leave me liking Tim and Conner. That doesn't give me a lot to hope for. Especially if the writers are going to rename Red Robi n to Drake. I'm sorry but I just can't get behind a character who is basically being called a male Duck. It just turns a good character into a laughable one. While I totally agree he should get a new name. It's past time for that really. But not Drake. It's stupid on so many levels. And it's his actual real last name. Come on Tim is a genius he would not pick his last name for his superhero name. He just wouldn't. Though it would give Dick and Jason loads of jokes to make with it. That could be funny. Still writers please... no. more

It was fine. Exploring Teen Lantern's origin was cool I guess. The art was nice. That's...about it. I find myself not overly enthusiastic about this series at all honestly.

Prelude: Like many of Bendis' titles right now, Young Justice has been quite low in quality for me. But, we're finally getting an origin for Teen Lantern so that might be good? The Good: I actually liked Teen Lantern's introduction. It's interesting enough anyway and is much better than what we originally had heard. The Bad: Bendis-Speak. Hope I don't have to explain. The whole Earth 3 stuff is also very lackluster here. Conclusion: While finally getting Teen Lantern's origin was interesting and good, the rest sort of falls apart.

This issue was dedicated to giving background on Teen Lantern and actually succeeded in making her less interesting. Before we were led to believe she had hacked the Green Lanterns but it turns out she just got handed her gear. Bendis took a good idea and made it boring. Which is crazy because it was HIS idea that he ruined.
