While out on the town, Zan and Jayna realize how horrible the teen date night scene is. Using the innocent minds of two aliens, Russell subtly dismantles so many stereotypes of men and women on dates, while at the same time reinforcing this sibling bond between our heroes.This comicis impressing on all fronts. Withback to back Eisner award nominations for Best Writer, Mark Russell is making a name for himself and it's only a matter of time before Wonder Twins gets the recognition it deserves. Even though this wasn't my favorite issue of the series, nor my favorite issue Russell as written overall, I still recommend the issue to any Mark Russell fan as well as anyone interested in a clever read. It's humorous, insightful, witty, and chalked full of unique messages that will make you stop and ask some great questions over a cup of coffee. Pick it up at your local shop. The issue has a nice message about the silliness of the whole "friendzone" line of attack, but it feels overly broad just like Russell's guest-starring issue on Harley Quinn. It's beating the same few points home for the first issue, but the characters are likable enough that I barely noticed. Read Full Review

Wonder Twins #4 gave us a fun twist to date night. Many things can go wrong, and this creative team got bold with the situations Jayne, Zan, and Polly got themselves into. It was commendable that at the same time they were able to also get in some solid character development for a character you didn't expect to hold as much relevance as she has so far. Maybe it's because I've recently had the idea of love and romance stuck in my head, but this was a fun issue. It has some problems, sure, but if you're looking to have some fun with colorful artwork, enjoyable characters and failed teen romances, you could certainly go to worse places for it. I love this series. Honestly, I feel like I'm in middle school all over again reading it. This is such a pure book. Very light and the artwork complements the writing very well. I've been waiting on this series since it was first announced and I can say unlike the "new age of hero's" DC has hit the mark with their wonder comic imprint because they have been putting out some superb books.

I appreciate Zan's naive but positive attitude towards the friend zone, having fallen victim to that devious zone during my own high school years. I also enjoy what a douche Red Flag is and I really want Gun Cop to be a real movie now.

Well the art looks great, the story unfortunately falls flat. This seems to be a “whatever happens, happens because why not” type of book. Kinda wish they never brought them back if this is how they are going to be.

Overall this issue had its fun moments, its good Russell (satire), its bad Russell (preachiness), and ongoing terrific art from Stephen Byrne. I’m not sure about the underlying arc of the Math family, and I’d like a little more Wonder Twins powers activating. Hopefully both are resolved in the final two issues.

Mark Russell can be a God-Tier writer but he tends to meander when he's not writing a tight or focused story. Wonder Twins has some interesting underlying themes but the humor doesn't always work and the jokes in this installment couldn't move a crowd with a gun. Take that statement with a grain of salt. I'm a little older, crankier, and out of touch with most of the people, I interact with. I'm not even sure if Wonder Twins has an overall point. There is a villain plot involving "The League of Annoyance" that offers a throughline for the series but the focus appears to be a series of vignettes detailing the twins and their adapting to life on earth. This isn't the worst comic I've reviewed but the hit rate on the jokes is pretty low and if this was Showtime at the Apollo Mark would have been swept off the stage. This issue has the Wonder Twins branching out of school and superheroic's and going out on the town. Jayna goes out with a guy that happens to be a member of the aforementioned "League of Annoyance". Zan also finds companionship with a girl clearly using him as a rebound. I don't want to spoil the comic but shenanigans ensue on both sides. There's also a subplot in this issue involving their friend Polly whose father is being blackmailed by Lex Luthor into becoming a supervillain. Polly doesn't really stand out as a character and falls into the consistent trap of mainstream Black Characters being flat, uninteresting, unnaturally virtuous, and great at science. It's something that we see across media so I won't hold it against this series but I wish we had more variety in our media particularly when it comes to Black Women. I did smirk a few times while reading but ultimately the issue was a dud aside from its messaging which does make a valid point when it comes to dating. Stephen Byrne also seems to be phoning it in this issue. Nothing stands out in the story and I found it odd that a comic featuring superheroes and villains has no action to speak of aside from angst, drama, and bad jokes. I'm starting to feel like Wonder Twins was a 6-issue mini-series stretched out to 12. There have been a few moments that shine but I'm wishing that there was more consistency to the story being told. The series still has the potential to turn the corner but I'd be lying If I didn't mention it being soft in the middle. Rating: 6/10 more

Bleh. Don't find Mark Russell's writing that funny. Nor do I find his social commentary to be all that unique or interesting. I've been on the internet before. So what we've got here is a serviceable story that just sort of exists! Great.
