The Penguin #0

With The Penguin #0, it feels like we are in for a wild ride. One that will explore Cobblepot on a different level then we have seen, and that is always exciting to a fan. Exploring the world of Gotham in a deeper way is always fun, but I also like that we get to see the stark, raw comparison of Metropolis and Gotham at their centers. Definitely a recommended pick up. Penguin #0 is a strange comic. It establishes a new status quo for Penguin without really being about him. Its also not paced quite right for a single issue because of its nature as a collection of shorter backup stories. Its probably not a necessary read for the upcoming series (especially since this is written by Zdarsky and the upcoming series is being written by Tom King). And the story isnt terribly gripping. But its fun enough and diverting, especially for readers who like a nice Catwoman entry. Read Full Review

This is a very inessential comic that is mostly a cash grab. I could be wrong but I expect Tom King's The Penguin #1 will be easily readable without this. If you already own the Batman issues this story comes from don't buy it. If you like well-written comics, I'd recommend you skip this as well. The script isn't terrible and the art is good but it's just so dumb in concept that everything falls apart. Read Full Review

Expected better by Chip Zdarsky

It personally feels like Chip Zdarsky is stretched too thin. A lot of people have issues with Chip Zdarsky because he's doing too much to an established character. The things he did on Daredevil worked because Daredevil isnt as mainstream as Batman, but when Chip Zdarsky does those same deconstruction stuff to Batman and his rogue galleries, it comes off as out of character. And this was the first major miss for Chip Zdarsky in his DC tenure.
