Comic Crusaders - Shawn Warner
Nov 08, 2018Overall the issue does a very convincing job of furthering Derek James' journey to become, not only a part of the DCU, but a legitimate hero in his own right. Perhaps even more intriguing than Derek's narrative is the possibilities that now exist for the New 52 Action Comics Superman. Likewise, The Unseen now have new narrative roads open to them and I for one cannot wait to see where they lead. For an annual, this one delivers and then some, the only small detail I would have liked to see changed is to have had Morrison write the entire issue, particularly since the two narratives flow together seamlessly. Nov 07, 2018Sideways Annual #1 turned out a lot better than I initially thought it would be. It honestly just felt like another issue of Sideways, but longer than the normal. Nothing too special, though it was better written than some of the other issues up to this point. I'm glad that this issue found a way to bring things to a close so we can get back to the things that really matter for Derek back home. Read Full Review

Black Nerd Problems - Chris Aiken
Nov 08, 2018However, none of this distracts enough to ruin what is ultimately a solid ending. There are a lot of unanswered questions this issue but, hopefully, they will be addressed down the line. This adventure definitely seems to be what Derek needed after the death of his mother. It will be interesting to see what state Derek will be in emotionally when he gets back to Earth. DC has something nice going on with these just outside the inner circle new creations in the DCU"Sideways, the Silencer, Immortal Men. I'm almost surprised that I am saying this, but I actually hope that we get to see a crossover event with all of these characters that as far as I can tell came out of Metal? While this issue slides just shy of greatness, it was a pleasant read and a nice way to get my stack started for this week. I'm hoping that it comes up in the randomizer for another drop-in soon. The really frustrating thing about Sideways is that the character has all of the tools to be great. Aside from the obvious parallels to Spider-man, the character is young, he has a cool costume. Derek is one of the few latino superheroes out there. He's plugged into social media, pop culture and wants to be a YouTuber. At the time of this writing (Yes I'm always Late) the series has been canceled. It just represents a huge missed opportunity that could have been avoided if the character had some slight tweaks. The biggest problem with Derek James is that he has a different personality in every issue. It makes it hard to really relate to the character when he doesn't really have a core. It feels like the costume and powers were put to more

It's more of a direct continuation of the previous issue than a standalone annual, but I am fine with that. It's a fun read nonetheless.

It wasn't a total wash, I think the Unseen making their way to Earth was cool.
