Frankly it is nice to see a hero being heroic, this is the sort of thing that has fueled the comic book industry since its inception. This comic has drama, excitement and even some humor and most importantly it engaged me enough not only to want to see the next issue but to collect the previous issues of the series to get the full story. In a way, I feel like the team behind Sideways was able to merge many of the different tones that they were approaching in previous issues. It's good to see those tones collide into one cohesive story. I had myreservations before about the way the book would switch from one type of tale to the next, but at this point that's just the nature of how the story is told. It's also the way Derek's life operates. So, it works. There is a lot to look forward to with Sideways as Derek's life gets a bit more complicated and plenty of questions are raised. The artwork is the icing on the cake. Kenneth Rocafort and Shane Davis are two of my favorite artists out there. Their work here is wonderful. Sideways is a great little book with a lot of strong talent. I love what happens in this month to month. Read Full Review

Sideways #12 made it pretty hard to see this story through to the end, but at the very least the last issue should be one to look forward to for hope that there are plans for this hero beyond this solo adventure. Near the end of its run,Sideways continues to do what it does best: put a average, likeable and relateable kid in the craziest of situations. It isn't the most original concept around, but it's fun, and you could do a heck of a lot worse. Read Full Review

After everything Derek James has gone through, from a dopey kid with a YouTube channel to tragic hero traveling throughout the multiverse and beyond earning a place within the DCU, his greater purpose was unfortunately never fully realized. Set to be the Spider-Man analog for the DC Universe, Sideways gets placed on the back burner until another creator can find a lucrative use for the young hero. With one final issue left to stand, readers can only hope for one last heartfelt goodbye from none other than Kenneth Rocafort. Read Full Review

The art was good, but the inconsistency in the visual style of the artists along with Rocafort's bookended visuals matched the inconsistent narrative of the issue. Read Full Review

If you're still reading this book, you might as well hold on until it ends with the next issue. There are some developments that I'm honestly very interested in seeing DiDio wrap up, namely Derek's relationship with Ernie, his relationship with his father, what happened to Dominus, as well as resolving this week's cliffhanger. Last Month Dan Didio was fired from DC comics. I'm not sure of the specifics or why the decision was made beyond speculation. I know that he had a lot of ideas that were hit and miss but with Sideways I think I have an idea of what Dan was going for. Derek (Sideways) started up as a blatant Spider-Man ripoff. By issue #12 he's his own man with his own set of circumstances. If Peter Parker was created in 2020 I think he'd be more like Sideways than Spider-Man. That's the biggest compliment I can give to this series. It's really sad that the "New Age of Heroes" line didn't work out because some of the characters like Sideways, Damage, The Silencer and The Curse of Brimstone really did the best they could. By the end of their runs, the characters had established themselves as more than simply Marvel clones. The bulk of this issue centers around the aftermath of a disaster. Detective Hopkins finds Derek semi-conscious and they escape. From here Derek confirms his identity as Sideways and gives a rundown regarding the events that lead to the explosion. It's during these scenes we get to see the character's potential. Derek is selfless, heroic, light-hearted and simply has a pretty awesome powerset. The rifting ability has a ton of untapped potential especially considering the interdimensional aspects hinted at. The powers and personality traits take Derek a step beyond simply being discount Peter Parker. The action sequences in this book are appropriately epic and beautifully rendered by Kenneth and Shane. The conclusion of the comic ends on a cliffhanger that is positive yet bittersweet. I was really down on this series initially but my respect for the character has grown exponentially. I'm pretty down on the fact that Sideways #13 will be my last review of this series. For More: GTMediareview.com more
