DC Comics News - Steve Ray

VerdictWhere some could find the slower pace of this issue a little off-putting, I enjoyed it, especially after the roller-coaster thrill ride of issues 50-56. Ric's relationship with Sapienza has grown and so has his connection with Bea. Having Duela Dent, back and adopting her “Joker's Daughter” persona again is intriguing, to say the least. This character has crossed over from being hero, villain, anti-hero and everything in-between, so seeing her in these pages will definitely add some spice. I look forward to finding out just how much, over the next few months. Read Full Review

I was starting to reach the point where I was anxiously awaiting Ric's return to Dick Grayson. After this issue? There's more life left in this storyline and there's still a number of fun possibilities to explore. And I'm all the way ready for it. Read Full Review

Overall yet another fantastic issue ofNightwing as one story line comes to an end and another begins. I look forward to going on the journey as we discover what the nefarious villain has planned for The Nightwings and Bludhaven. Lobdell and Kaplan have started something spectacular here. This all leads to one hell of an ending and one hell of a cliffhanger. The writers whet your appetite here and seem poised to really cut loose in the next issue. They make the build up worthwhile and interesting. Let's see what happens but it seems like it could be great! Read Full Review

Lastly, looks like the Joker's Daughter is back in the fold. She has to be one of the more disturbing characters in DC's roster. How in any way could it make sense to anyone to wear a dead person's face as a mask? Who cares if it's your "dad?" You have to be a different kind of crazy to think that's OK in any capacity. Nightwing #57 does its job as a part one to a new arc. Had most of Ric's contribution to this issue been edited down/out (mainly the rehashing inner monologue), I think I would have genuine excitement as to where this new Duela Dent story could go and how insane it can get. I think I'd be marking my calendar for #58's release so I could see how much more about Bea we will learn. Unfortunately, I know Ric will be thinking again, and that drops my excitement down a bit. The fact that it's starting off slow does give me hope that they will build a good character story for Duela, like they did with Scarecrow. I just have to hope they end stronger than they did with Scarecrow. It's only the first issue so we will see where this ride takes us. Read Full Review

    Weird Science - Eric Shea

While I'm happy to see some of the side characters of this series get some background, while continuing to show the Nightwing team in action, the story that we're moving into felt a bit boring to me and a bit overdone.  Yeah, it is something that would befell a city such as Bludhaven, but it came off as a bit of a dud, while much of this issue was used to catch up new readers to what's going on in the world of Nightwing.  I love the art and the prospect of the villain at hand, but overall I felt that this issue was lacking. Comic Crusaders - Shawn Warner

Overall, this is a major step in the right direction. I can only hope that this is an indication that Nightwing's course is being corrected and smooth sailing is in the stars. As a huge fan of Dick Grayson, as Robin, Nightwing and as Batman I believe he deserves better than to be reduced to a shadow of himself by a sniper's bullet to further the fall of his mentor. Dick Grayson is more than a plot device, he is a beloved hero and hopefully we will be seeing that hero again very soon. Read Full Review

Don't be confused. I still hate this entire Ric Grayson approach, however, Nightwing #57 offers some really nice character moments that I can't really knock. Ric takes a back seat as Beatrice and the Nightwings take the spotlight, and there genuinely is some good work here. Read Full Review
