Martian Manhunter shows the character at his lowest moment as we enter the halfway point of this series. We can hope that writer Steve Orlando will build him up again with the second half, but after all the tragedy J'onn has been through and the menacing obstacle standing in his way, I'm not so sure that will happen. The bigger picture of Orlando's story is given further grounding and motivation with this flashback issue. Had the series as a whole started with this story, it might have lent a great deal of momentum for the 11 installments which would have followed it, but some of the impact of the story would have felt missing. I was skeptical about making J'onn a corrupt cop in this story, but the dramatic payoff is well worth it and J'onn's path to redemption has been fascinating. Riley Rossmos art is fantastic. So many moments give the reader a visceral reaction and the style is great throughout. There is a fluidity to the depiction of Mars and its inhabitants that makes the story more interesting visually. Read Full Review

If memory serves, this is a 12-issue series. Now that much of the origin is over, I look forward to the next six issues. As a manhunter, I appreciate seeing J'onn in super-hero mode, and seeing the added layers of his budding crime fighter career and eventual JLA membership. Steve Orlando and Riley Rossmo arrive at the half-way point of the series and deliver its strongest issue yet. This is largely because it features the relatively straightforward story of a man in desperate circumstances trying to save his family. The tight focus on J'onn, his wife and young child means the ending packs an emotional punch and, although there are some missteps here and there, the issue as a whole is very enjoyable. I haven't been loving this book, but this issue really hits hard with the emotional manipulating. And, I don't know if it's just hitting home for me because of my own personal experiences, but it really works.

I think this was never part of his origin in the past and I actually dig the additions made. The art is fantastic as always.
