It shouldn't look this easy. Making new Green Lantern Corps stories should be hard for any team, even if they are some of the best in the business. But Venditti and Sciver don't just make it look easy, they make it look fun and entertaining. The stories perfectly fit the characters and settings; villains perfectly mirror the heroes they challenge. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #42 builds perfectly on both Green Lantern's recent past as well as its storied history. Not only is the book beautiful thanks to Ethan Van Sciver and Jason Wright's fantastic visuals, Robert Venditti is really on his A game as well. Old foes return to wreck havoc for the Green Lantern Corps. The dialogue is amazing in this issue as an argument is made to what constitutes a hero and justice. It's a great conversation and it's one that leaves Hal questioning himself. The visuals are incredible, with heroes looking amazing and villains fierce. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #42 does an excellent job presenting the Darkstars as one of the biggest threats the GLC are going to being going against. Robert Venditti's spending time giving Tomar-Tu some quality character development went a long way in giving more weight to the direction the Darkstars will be going in. Having Ethan Van Sciver on art duties made Venditti's story even stronger as the sense of importance in the Darkstars rise was elevated even more. Read Full Review

This issue was mostly spent setting up the Darkstars and Tomar-Tu's transition into their corps. There wasn't any fighting really, but it was still incredibly interesting. I love the time spent setting up Tomar-Tu's perspective on justice and the lack of permanency Green Lantern justice has. This made his choice to join the Darkstars wholly believable. Those Darkstars we saw seven issues ago are back, and now they're actually doing stuff. The stuff they're doing picks up a loose story thread from even further back. I'd applaud this, but there are so many other dropped lines in this series, it's a little too late to play "continuity-minded" now. Ethan Van Sciver returns to the drawing board for this issue. I would expect no less,given the raise in stakes for this particular storyline. But again, experience has taught me not to expect him to hang around for the entire arc. I hate itwhen that happens: A comic book company puts its a-list talent on a story,only for him to step away (for whatever reason) before the end. I can't help but give this a 10. I have been waiting for ages to see the Darkstars return and this did not disappoint, they even made some interesting changes to the Darkstars that open up a lot of possibilities for stories in the future.

Welcome to the Oblivion Bar where the first round is on me and the pretzels are free! Be warned: like the pickled eggs at the bar, this issue is going to get SPOILED rotten. I think I'm going to love this arc. R-ditti is connecting tons of stuff throughout his long run while throwing back to some old stuff. We get the Controllers and the Darkstars! I think this is going to be great. The Controllers recreate a better version of the Darkstars that is more powerful than ever. A Darkstar appears to be a robotic suit that takes a host giving it abilities... like iron man armor but faster, stronger, and now with what appears to be MIND CONTROL!!! That's right; Darkstar 1 comes fully ready to fly through space at the speed of light AND t eleport into a sciencell to take control of its hosts as long as your version of Justice is DEATH!!!!!! So Darkstar 1 has taken control of Tomar Tu and laid waste to Hal like a yodeling country boy at the local Walmart. So what's next for Hal and Pals? Honestly, I hope this arc is a long one. Maybe two 6 issue arcs that lead into one another? I feel like we get these arcs lately that should be bigger but they just fizzle out. The Zod arc was fine but it seemed quick to end. I want the Controllers and the Darkstars to stick around for a bit. Great opening arc. Nice art. I'm hooked and excited for the next issue! Great time to hop on board Hal and Pals if you haven't yet and ride out the end of R-ditti's run.
