Green Lantern #36

For those following the entire Godhead event, I think they will find a lot to enjoy in Green Lantern #36. Plenty is established and progresses, lots of meaty bits are presented, and there's an excitement to see where it goes next week. A strong, solid issue, all around. Read Full Review

Green Lantern #36 is a perfect example of the wonderful dynamic between Hal Jordan and Sinestro and why their complex relationship is so important to the Lantern universe.  The arrival of the New Guardians provides exactly what's needed to move GodHead into its second act in some exciting directions.  As the New Gods reveal some cracks in their armor Hal plans a most unusual response to the theft of their rings.  This is one of Robert Venditti's best issues yet in his run, earning five out of five lanterns. Whether Venditti thinks so or not, this has got to be the best issue during his Green Lantern run.  Everything was just so perfectly crafted that I found myself scared that I was reading a perfect issue.  I have a phobia of such things because once you read a perfect comic, no other could ever compare.  All the dialog was spot on and Francis Portela's style was perfect to convey this story.  Just so much awesome that I could never be able to articulate properly how great it really is.  Go out and find out for yourself because if you miss this one, you'll be kicking yourself. The newest issue of Green Lantern is a huge turning point in terms of pure enjoyment, dialogue, and story beats. So far, Robert Venditti's Godhead has been a bit of a disappointment with the overpowered and over-jerky New Gods ripping through our beloved Lanterns like they were tinfoil. Godhead continues to be a very strong story. Sure, it's super-long and runs through way too many books, but overall, it's been a fantastic ride, so it's worth it. A lot is happening in this issue and there's a lot of revelations, almost too many, and the book is a bit slow and a tad dull at parts, but overall, it's a great read and a very essential moment in the overall Godhead story arc. This book isn't breaking new ground, but the story is solid enough to get enjoyment from. As long as New Gods are in the books, I'll be buying, but it remains to be seen if I'll continue on Green Lantern after the Godhead storyline. Read Full Review

Robert Venditti comes out swinging, delivering a comic that's humming with energy. Perhaps what's most intriguing about this issue is the way that this energy informs the plot and the artwork, rather than the other way around. There are some blemishes – weaknesses in the art, apparent reversals of theme, some rushed moments – but Green Lantern #36 just feels vibrant and emphasis on humor and character work bears that out. Though some will bemoan the title's subjugation to the "Godhead" event, GL #36 accepts that it's merely a chapter in this story and focuses on being the best chapter it can be. Read Full Review

GL 36 is a straightforward bridge book between major events. A good guy pep talk, a bad guy pep talk, and the introduction to a new story element that serves as a good cliff hanger for the next part. We don't learn too much, and so far, Hal seems to be as much of an audience member as we are, all while Sinestro and Kyle do most of the heavy-lifting story-wise. I won't spoil it, but while the ending scene is fun, it almost cheapens a character who's become a pretty big villain in the ring-slinger universe. Read Full Review

What is really frustrating is that they keep trying to tease us with changes to the Green lantern mythos, but never actually allowing any of the changes to stick, which makes for a frustrating Green Lantern reading experience, and one that can't be ameliorated by endlessly upping the stakes in their intergalactic wars. Godhead is proving to be a very worthwhile event although it seems like the Green Lantern book is always featuring some event. Seeing Hal interact with Sinestro is always fun and interesting and this book has a heavy does of that. I would welcome Darkseid returning to a universal event in the New 52 because I felt the original New 52 Justice League run with him didn't do the character justice. Godhead is essentially a weekly book as well and I will be picking up Green Lantern Corps #36 to see where this goes. Hopefully the payoff is worth it.

Godhead Act 2 has started, and what a way to start! There's very little action in this book, as it's setting up the next act, but the character moments here are more than worth the cover price. The pages with Hal Jordan and Sinestro are fantastic, and Robert Venditti is able to take the final interaction between Hal and Sinestro from Geoff John's run, and building it to another level. The brief scuffle between the two is fun, but the dialogue is what brings this up to a great issue. And, while Billy Tan sits this issue out, artist Francis Portela is more than up to snuff, delivering fantastic panel layouts. Also, something that's really undervalued in comics is expressive faces, but Portela excels at them, able to get across some great come dy using pictures. This issue of Godhead comes highly recommended. more

I wonder how many more acts there are to go. This is a pretty strong issue, largely because the New Gods are barely in it. As villains, they are about as interesting as mud. The strength of this issue is in the art and especially the interaction between Hal and Sinestro. I swear, the page lights on fire every times these two get together. Sinestro sees things in Hal that he can't himself and it is enlightening.
