The Flash Wars are coming so if you want to jump on the book and get up to speed before that happens, this issue is a good place for that.  You will get caught up with the major players and even get reacquainted with some old favorites.  All that and great art to boot! Read Full Review

The Flash (2016-) #39 is a beautifully illustrated energetic work that moves at a comfortable pace, and despite the lack of world-ending dramatics, manages to entertain while simultaneously setting the stage for what promises to be an interesting arc. Read Full Review

It's quite possible that this is the start of another truly great Flash epic, and one that doesn't involve mucking about with the timeline for a change. But with the Flash(es) so tied into the New 52/Rebirth saga that I'm constantly surprised that this issue – indeed the whole run – hasn't delved into this further. I have written this before; it is always a good thing to see someone named Carmine drawing a Flash comic. Di Giandomenico is the perfect foil for Carmine Infantino. Their styles with elongated muscular limbs is very similar. Di Giandomenico is of course a much more current and dynamic artist but he is equally suited for the Flash. One thing that he does not do as much as the other Carmine, are multiple drawings of Flash doing things at super speed I one panel. Instead of that or speedlines, he likes to populate his panels featuring Flash with thunderbolt contractions. Read Full Review

The Flash #39 is a solid comic book, but it should have been so much more for the 700th issue (an oversized issue or something like Marvel is doing for Cap)! The new story arcs set up some nice plots and get the ball moving. The art, for the most part, looks good besides some minor coloring issues. If Grodd is truly needing to suck in the Speed Force for his own nefarious reasons, I'm hoping it results in a lot fewer speedsters. Part of what makes our superheroes interesting is their uniqueness. When the Earth was overrun with Kryptonians, Superman was boring. When the world is overrun with speedsters, The Flash is likewise. (The only one who gets a pass on this is Green Lantern because he's in an armed police force, rather than a metahuman.) Let's get Barry back to truly being "the fastest man alive" and have him face threats other than those from people who can run just as fast -- if not faster -- than he can. Read Full Review

The Flash's 700th issue is a good story,with terrific potential. There wasn't anything screaming at me, “THIS IS AWESOME!” but I found myself entertained. (The point of comics I think) This was largely a set-up issue, so it really is okay. It does it”s job of preparing us for the next issue, which looks brutal for the Flash. Now that we have build-up out-of-the-way give me some Grodd action in #40 Mister Williamson! Read Full Review

In conclusion I do think that this is a fine issue, but not a strong issue. The last issue was so strong and this issue sets up a lot of cool and interesting ideas, but I feel Williamson needs to iron out these ideas so it doesn’t feel jumbled. Read Full Review

I haven't read an issue of "The Flash" in a while, but decided to give this one a try. First off--the cover is seriously awesome. The power of Grodd here is imposing. Next, it was a pretty good read--there is one moment in the book where things get eerily quiet and the atmosphere established by Williamson and Di Giandomenico is really creepy. As always, when Di Giandomenico draws this, it becomes a much more dynamic book. The ending has me looking forward to a very cool arc.

I enjoyed the issue and all of the little story lines that are explored as Barry takes Iris on a journey of Barry's life as the Flash and Grodd is back and boy does he look desperate for that speed force. WHY?! I love the art here.

Fun start to a new arc for the series. I's always good to see Grodd featured in a Flash story and I'm curious to see where they go with this. I really enjoyed the Barry/Iris moments they were well done and also congrats on the Scarlet Speedster on finally getting 700 issues!

This felt like a pretty good jumping point, especially with lots of explanations in the first few pages. Not too excited about Meena and that strange guy again, but Grodd's appearance was done very well.

The worst part of this issue is the cover. I mean, come on man, the cover gives away the reveal at the end! It's a beautiful cover, but how about using it for issue #40? AFTER we read about Grodd's reveal. There's nothing worse than having a cover SPOIL the ending of a book! Ok, so besides that it was a solid issue. I did love the art.
