Detective Comics #1045

Detective Comics #1045 is two grim tales for the price of one. The first is dramatic, tense, and a superb character study of two driven individuals at odds. The second is a straightforward plot of a hero searching for answers and the foulness found along the way. Detective Comics #1045 wraps up its storyline in a satisfying fashion, not just giving Nakano a change of heart, but demonstrating why he would have one. The more personal approach to the characters has been a strength of Tamaki's run so it's only logical this storyline's conclusion would hinge on it. This is an issue that was needed; to get Batman and Nakano kiiiindaaa understanding each other and know that they need to work together, and what better way to do that than desperate survival. Overall, it's not bad and I have no issues with it. It's nothing special either (not an insult, btw) other than the art, and that's okay because it could possibly be simply showing us a moment where the timeline that would be Future State shifts to something else. The art is outstanding, but otherwise this isn't a good issue. It feels rushed and afterward I'm just bored. There are some good ideas here, such as Nakano's change of heart, but the execution isn't up to par. I can only recommend this issue to Mora and Bellaire super-fans who want a complete collection of this team's Batman art. Otherwise I'd say there are much better books on stands this week. I hope this is the end of the Vile parasites. I'm so tired of parasite monsters used in everything these days. If I wanted stuff like that I'd watch Dr. Who. The end does add a little intrigue. Is Batman willing to work closer to Nakano to show him he isn't the enemy? It may be an interesting development if explored right in the future. I do look forward somewhat to the Tower saga. All I ask is the new so-called Batman keep out of it and not be the one to butt in and save the day in the end. Regardless of what DC or his title says, he is NOT Batman and never will be. Don't try to put him in this series' spotlight to sell it to us. This saga will determine for me if I want to keep reading Detective beyond that point, as "Abyss" will do the same with Batman. DC is at a very controversial point in its history, and some readers are keeping an eye out for the right jump off point before things get too intense. more

My main investment in Batman in 2021 was buying volume 9 of the Golden Age Omnibus stories. At least there were some mysteries to be solved in the Golden Age, now just horror and soap operas. If we took Sherlock Holmes stories and made them all horror and soap operas, long-time readers would also object. The editors just don't understand who the Batman actually is.

Don’t get me wrong, this comic was pretty good. The only issue is, why does this have any relation to Fear State? Not only does the events of this issue with Nakano go completely against what has happened in Fear State, but now we found out that this has been going on prior to an issue that was released 2 months ago. Art was amazing though, Mora is killing it in that department

I mean, Tamaki couldn't be more obvious to what she alluded here if she actually tried (she really didn't) but the story is not that bad. I still couldn't care less about the backup.

Actually, not a bad issue. DC just should’ve never pretended it tied into Fear State. It doesn’t. Reminds me of way back during Avengers Disassembled there were all these loose “tie-ins.” Like Red Skull showing up in Cap’s solo book and going “LOL So I hear you’re having a shitty week, Steve…” Kirkman was ahead of his time, no doubt at the behest of editorial. I actually found the back-up to be entertaining. I’m excited to see where it goes. Only in a comic book would you see criminal justice reform affect the people who (pretend to) care about it.

Are we reading EC Comics Weird Fantasy or Detective Comics? Is there a difference anymore? Mariko Tamaki continues to use Detective Comics as "Horror Comics," as WildStorm's Ben Abernathy keeps editing/driving the "Gotham Comics" Group towards mainly horror and pro-criminal stories. Dan Mora is reportedly leaving Tec next month, so his art will be gone. Detective Comics covers now looking like EC Comics sci-fiction monster series. Should Mariko introduce the Crypt Keeper from Tales from the Crypt, next? Maybe Batman vs. Godzilla? Maybe Batman vs. Vampirella? I mean we have another DC Vampire series already, but DC Comics does not seem to get too much of horror. To those who don't understand there is a difference, try reading some of th e OLD Detective Comics stories. There once was a time (also when there were complete stories) when detectives (without costumes) in Detective Comics also had great and interesting stories. Go figure. Astounding to imagine that Detective Comics used to focus on stories where "Crime Does Not Pay." more

I've noticed myself how there's less Detective work to Batman's cases of late. In fact if it weren't Batman's debut series I doubt it would still be in publication. But I remember for a long time in this book Batman actually solved mysteries (And he usually solved it in a single issue, it didn't take 11).

The Crimson Avenger was also solving mysteries in Detective Comics before The Batman. They were short stories and solved in that story. For me, the Crimson Avenger, Sandman Wesley Dodds, and The Batman are really not horror comics figures, a stretch to make them sci-fi (done a lot with Batman), but really all "mystery men" detectives at the core.

BTW my Batman vs Vampirellla remark while sarcastic, appears to be the exact direction of the "DC vs Vampires" story and likely the new Queen Vampire is probably Talia Al Gh'ul. Like we need 12 issues to figure that out. But DC figures the soap opera endless story arcs are $$$$. As long as we keep paying, they are right.
