Detective Comics #1015

It is rare to see such a natural progression with a comic villain in this regard. This is very well written on top of being Freeze's one goal for his entire existence. Nora being back and regaining her own agency. Things in the Freeze family are about to change. Read Full Review

While this does knock a bit of the wind out of my sails, the story, art and direction is still good. This is exactly what I expect when I read Detective Comics; a story with twists and turns, awesome villains and stories that we might not get out of the main series. Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke have been allowed to go hog wild with the stories theyre telling and seamlessly weaving it into Year of the Villain only makes it so much better. I love this series, and this new arc has been intriguing, surprising and action-packed. The art switch did lessen my enjoyment a little, but I realise that this is just a matter of personal taste, and should not be taken as a reflection on the incredible talents who are creating these wonderful stories for our enjoyment. I just don't want to see Nora turn out to be bad. Freeze's emotional arc is selling this story right now, and how it concludes will determine the quality of the entire story line. This book suffered from poor artwork and an up and down story. I appreciated the author embracing Batman's detective work and his collaboration with Alfred and Lucius to find a cure to Freeze's frozen formula. However, the ending left me wanting more and wishing that the author would take more chances with Batman as a character. I wish Tomasi gave us more of the Freeze's as a team to make Nora's inevitable treason mean more. We've waited so long for her to come back and we only really get one splash page of what we, or maybe it's just me, actually want to see. And the issue overall is forgettable and boring. Mahnke's art continues to carry this title. While Tomasi is an impactful writer when he wants/is allowed to be, this issue is mostly paint-by-numbers plotting that serves only to rush us toward an unfulfilling conclusion. Prelude: Tomasi has been doing a great job with Cold Dark World but now it's time to break the ice... I could fit some ice puns in here come to think of it. The Good: I actually like Nora stepping out and becoming her own villain. Also the question of is this Nora's will, Victor's or Luthor's serum is very interesting. Vise versa I'm enjoying that Victor knows he is over his head and comes to Batman for help. Even if it's a team effort, I do like Bruce using his intellect rather than just fighting the entire time. The Bad: Continuity is the main one with the Bat-Signal and Lucius fully knowing Bruce's secret. Conclusion: Another strong issue and I'm enjoying the direction it is going in.

I liked it. „Curing“ Nora& turning her into a villain is at least fresh& I think it makes sense for her. All the time we always saw Freeze making the decisions for her, so it’s nice seeing her perspective. She was trapped in ice for at least a decade, therefore it makes sense for her going crazy. I also liked the scene, where Batman protects Batcow& refuses to use animals as test subjects. Overall I think Freeze‘s story is the only interesting Year of The Villains storyline so far, since it brought change to the character at least& something new for the reader as well. However the reminder of Alfred getting shot in Kings crappy Batman run was a downer. Can‘t believe DC is going through with it.

Are we supposed to loath Freeze's determined love or support it? I can't tell. He is supposed to be a sympathetic character and I would hate if the point would be to hate everything he does to save his wife.

"Shoot straight Mr. Pennyworth" Tomasi is a good craftsman and this issue is just that. A good craft. But one, I think, that is a little below what Tomasi is usually writing. It's a fine story with good art, but it's predictable and not very captivating.

Sigh... well, it could have been worse, I guess, *cough* Snyder's Batman Annual #1 *cough*. The comic, while surely better than New 52's butchered origin story of Mr. Freeze, faile to impress me in the slightest. It feels cheesy, silly and quite frankly nonsensical. Gotta love how all of a sudden Nora found herself enjoying the life of a villain, with absolutely no signs foreshadowing it. She was good, and then click, she's bad, she was happily married and then she wasn't. No character development nor story needed, when you can simply introduce or change something, hoping people won't notice, let alone give a damn. I do, though. I do. I'm sad to say, but for the first time in my comic reader's career, I'm tired of Peter J. Tomasi. This entire arc feels like one giant mistake, and one that scarred Mr. Freeze for several years to come, until the next time Nora is inevitably ressurected. more

I guess we're just supposed to assume that Batman telling Freeze that accepting a deal from Lex Luthor was bad and Freeze should have expected this as explaining why Nora has the sudden character change. One line of dialog just doesn't cut it though as an explanation. As I've said before, Freeze is a villain with a shelf life. His always going on about Nora gets old, so the writer tried to mix things up. I feel this shows Freeze as a recurring character is at an end. Or I could be wrong.
