Detective Comics #1013 successfully digs down to touch on some emotional and moral issues in Mr. Freeze's story, while presenting a timeless interpretation of Batman. The relationship between Bruce and Alfred is heart warming and real, and it reminds the reader that Bruce is human, he's a real person under that cowl. Despite being intense and driven, the Batman cannot function without those around him. To top it off, this issue is easily accessible to new readers, making it a great place to start picking up Detective Comics, (but it wouldn't hurt to get last issue, too!) Read Full Review

This issue wasnt as amazing as the previous one, but Mahnkes awesome visuals made up for that. The last issue fleshed out Freezes darkness in a more real and terrifying way where the cold zombies felt like cartoon antics. While theres nothing wrong with that, its liable to drag a reader out of the story while the villain makes his NYEH, BATMAN getaway. I still have high hopes for the story, but this issue is best bought for the art alone. Read Full Review

For an issue that's effectively a prolonged chase scene, there's a lot of great character work here. Freeze is tragically grotesque in his actions, carelessly experimenting on innocent women in the hope of restoring his wife. Batman, meanwhile, proves that he has the right tool for any job, and adds a sense of welcome goofiness to what could have been a dour narrative. Factor in some wonderful dialogue and a pitch-perfect team if artists and this is another winner from Detective Comics. Read Full Review

This issue is a classic Batman story that includes solid detective work and action sequences. The art is solid and the overall story fits comfortably in DC's Year of the Villain event. The shift from the previous Deadshot/island storyline to the Year of the Villain Mr. Freeze storyline hasn't been great for this title's momentum, as it's shifted the focus away from Bruce's mission and towards a particularly crazy villain, especially in Batman: Detective Comics #1013. I absolutely loved the art. And just the way the issue is laid out to compliment the visuals are great (the zombie attack and the snowmobile chase are intense because of the way it's all put together). Again, I think that's been Tomasi's strength on Detective. But I still just don't care for the story. It's not incredibly awful like what's going on over in Superman, it's just... meh. Read Full Review

A lot of this issue focuses on Batman's redundancies in place to protect him from Freeze. While it was cool to see Batman's forethought in action, it did take a way a lot of the suspense this issue. Read Full Review

The current run of Detective is so much more satisfying in art and story than Batman. It reminds me of the late 70s Marshall Rogers run on Detective when compared to the late 70s Batman. The best Bat-title right now.

Prelude: Tomasi started his Freeze arc off well last issue, so let's see if he can continue it. The Good: Loved the opening scene. Batman scaring thugs never gets old. Alfred's Flash mask was amazing. I really like Freeze this issue. Also that cliffhanger is going to be interesting going forward. Doug Mahnke's art was superb here. The Bad: Continuity feels weird here. Did Freeze try to bluff Batman or was he telling the truth? I don't know. That headpiece on the fire suit. Nope. Conclusion: Another great issue with some minor muck-ups. Ultimately this is looking to be a very strong arc.

Detective Comics continues to be one of the better written DC titles and this book delivered in both terms of artwork and story telling.

Great art. Seems in Detective, we are just getting short issue stories. Might be better if they expand the issue count on this story. Dialogue is alright but something about this issue just isn’t getting my interest.

I understand why some might prefer Tomasi's Detective to King's Batman because some flat out hate King's Batman and I guess mediocrity is preferable to something one just hates. But this is mediocrity. Tomasi can and has done so much better. His whole run on this book so far has felt like one big fill-in.
