The level of darkness Raina Creel radiates is unleashed, especially in the case of her youngest son (or is it stepson?). The sequentials in their simplicity are straight to the point with minimal prose, making it an easy read and sometimes so quick they have to go back a few pages to pick up what was missed. The fact there is incentive to take a second look is proof of the engaging method of storytelling Joelle employs. Jones has reinvigorated Catwoman in the same way that the late Darwyn Cooke had years earlier by not ignoring what's canon and expanding on that foundation. Many of the panels of this issue were intermingled between two different storylines, one showing Selina's fight and then one showingVilla Hermosa's "First Lady" Raina Creel continuing her mission of chaos akin to an episode of House of Cards. The use of Allred's coloring was so important here because, without it, it would have been easy to get lost between the storylines. Selina's backgrounds are dosed in purple hues while Raina's are red. This created a dichotomy that was easy to discern visually. Overall, Catwoman continues to be a fantastic book that pushes Selina Kyle out of Batman's shadow and into the spotlight she deserves. Read Full Review

I have really enjoyed this series so far and have been able to overlook the overall lack of progression in the story.  I can't do that this month as Joelle Jones doesn't give us much we don't already know in an issue that looks great, but is over way too quickly.  I am still on the Catwoman trolley, but I'm going to need a bit more from here on out. A little bit of focus could take Joelle Jones and Catwoman a long way! The narrative feels clunky and ill-planned, which is a shame considering there are so many intriguing aspects that have been set-up. I can't help but feel that Jones is nothing more than a kid in a candy store at the moment. Joelle Jones is amazing and this book could probably exist without dialogue and still be worth coming back to every week. Reina Creel is a great villain and her stone cold killing of her husband was bone chilling. Catwoman is always a breezy read, but that speaks to the narrative pacing and the art more than minimal content. Hope this is a long run, but I imagine writing and drawing your own book monthly is grueling and can only go on for a short time.

Maybe I just don't remember this story as much as the next guy but I really enjoyed this issue. Yes, I admit that it is a slower pace than most, but the story and characterization are excellent. The villain is truly evil. She is the world's worst wife and mother not to mention also the ugliest one out there too. There's also multiple things going on which tie together in the end. In that way, I felt this issue was actually pretty busy and not that "slow". Lastly, I really do have to mention how excellent the art is in this series. I'm not an art-centric reader but Jones' art really sets this story apart.

After being somewhat befuddled by the direction of the previous issue, this one is pretty straightforward for better or worse. We pick up from the cliffhanger. Selina breaks up an attempt on her sister's life while the governor's wife, Raina Creel murders him and makes it look like a suicide. She injects him with the drug, Narssistrine, which paralyzes the user and thickens internal organs to the point of death.  Selina fends off a group of hospital orderlies but is eventually overwhelmed and knocked unconscious. The governor's son is given the task of giving the drug to Selina but fails when she escapes and gets the drop on him.  I enjoyed this issue a lot more than the last and based on this one I'll probably pick up issue #6 to see how the arc concludes. The conspiracy surrounding the governor and his wife is intriguing. The story draws you in and it's hard not to be invested considering how dramatic the issue is.  The downside of the comic is that it reads really quick and although the comic is interesting it's hard to justify the 3.99 price point. It doesn't feel worth it despite the beautiful art direction of Joell and Laura. This issue may simply be better read in trade.  It's a great read but needs a bit more meat on the bones.  more

"There's a good boy" Joelle Jones continues to tell her story slow, maybe a bit too slow at times, but she is doing it with a good dialogue and terrific art. Just like before Raina Creel proves to be an ugly, evil and despicable person. Your father is bleeding and dying, son, so what? Come hug mommy. That's some parenting. Selina is trapped and backed into a corner and just might break her former fiancé's one rule. This book takes a slow approach to tell a story and I can understand if someone is bothered by it. I, myself, enjoy it, but I have another problem with it. With some of the side characters not being super compelling or interesting and with the wait between issues, I just forget who's who. I read and think which on e was the detective, which one was Raina's son, which one was the evil doctor? But aside from that, I like this title. more

THE GOOD: -This issue had a really nice, really creative juxtaposition thing going on, that made an otherwise forgettable issue memorable for me. -Joelle Jones is a great artist. If for nothing else, buy this book for the art. -I thought the way Raina Creel killed her husband was really cruel and morbid in all the effective ways. -The scene where Catwoman fought all those orderlies was really cool in my opinion. -The scene where she was with Bruce was a pretty cool vision scene. Nice to know this series isn't just ignoring everything that happened over in Batman. -Raina Creel is a great villain, I also liked the way she manipulated her son. This series will have a hard time coming up with another villain as good as th e one it has. THE BAD: -The supporting characters are still a weak point. Aside from Raina and Maggie, none of them are great characters, and there are too many of them. -Wasn't a fan of the last page. The splash felt forced just because it was the last page. more

(off topic) - i just realized that during the big sale comixology had on DC comics last month, i'd actually bought 'Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes'. :-P . . . . . . comixology is actually having another big sale right now that is ending Friday. most titles are only $4.99. . . . i also picked up 'Watchmen Annotated' for $4.99, and it's normally listed at $34.99.

Neil Gaiman's entire Sandman run was pretty great. He's a great novel writer and comic book writer. I haven't read any of the new series because I find it hard to believe they can match his run, especially since he's not even writing them. I might check one of them out in trade.

yeah, Gaiman is really awesome. i enjoyed his Coraline a lot as well as his What Ever Happened to the Caped Crusader. ...yeah. whenever a series gets picked up by another creative team it's never the same level of quality.

Gaiman has written some of my favorite books, such as Neverwhere and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader was very good, but I cannot deny Alan Moore's WHttMoT (did not feel like spelling it out) is better. I also enjoyed Gaiman's 1602. That last statement is true especially after the previous run was one of the defining runs of that series.

both stories were good, but WHttMoT does have more readability. especially now that we know that Bruce didn't actually die. a friend of mine has speculated that the events within WHttCC was a dream/vision/hallucination that Bruce underwent from the Omega Sanction as he was sent back in time. that's actually a pretty cool notion, but if i'm reading Morrison's Batman i'm usually on the fence if i want to even include the full inclusion of Final Crisis in the read, let alone WHttCC.

That’s a good theory. Yeah, Morrison’s Batman is already a big read, thank god they’re finally putting it together in omnibuses, and Final Crisis is kind of a lot as well, especially to add on top of that. It all depends on what type of reading experience you’re looking for, I guess.

his theory really did help make WHttCC relevant again in my eyes. it had a totally different impact when i'd read it believing that Bruce was actually killed by Darkseid. though i myself prefer to trim the non-Morrison material when reading his Batman run. and IF i actually do include Final Crisis in a Morrison Batman read-through, i just skim F.C. 1-7 for the Batman related parts.

Issue was pretty good, a lot better than what we have been getting! Still some confusion from the first two issues that really don’t get answered but hoping it gets answers in next issue. It is a quick read that good amount of stuff happens. The cliffhanger though really didn’t impress me.

I expected more of this issue& hoped to find out more about what happens to Selina’s sister, so unfortunately I was disappointed there. However it’s still a good run. The plot is just slow, what doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

This is a slow, slow comic atm. Which would be okay if this intrigued me, but it's not. I still don't find Catwoman that compelling of a character (the issue brings out some of the most eye-rolling aspects of King's Catwoman/Batman pairing) and the villain is not doing enough here. Her evilness still doesn't seem to have much of a point. But then again, I'm not entirely sure what's going on, and I don't know if I'm supposed to yet, so maybe there was a point that I missed in the last four issues...
