After an improvement last issue, Birds of Prey #8 slides backwards. The tone isn't right, the plot feels forced and the mystery isn't playing out in an interesting manner. Putting Barbara Gordon in danger has been done before, and done better- "The Hunt for Oracle. Thompson still doesn't seem to get what makes Birds of Prey work as a concept. I've been really disappointed by these past two issues. I hope it picks up again and we start having a stronger balance between the comedy and serious elements. I want the art to be bold and the characters to be more than just the writer's punchlines. I'd honestly say avoid this series until further notice. This is tough! The ending is so aggressively dumb and obnoxious, but most of the issue was really channeling Gail Simone in a good way. This book has the voice and the vibe now, but the storytelling still needs to catch up.
