Waid and artist Skylar Patridge combine for a fun story with lots of excitement in Action Comics #1087. There's a new beginning here, and while that could've been a big turnoff, the fun and Silver Age feel to Superman's beginnings as Superboy are executed effectively executed. It's ok to have a continuity shift, an updating, and Waid and Patridge are doing it the right way here. But, shouldn't this really have been in Adventure Comics #530? Read Full Review

A damn near perfect mix of writing and artwork that capture the joys of Clark’s youth. It’s no nice to have Waid at the helm of DC’s flagship Superman title with a clear and focused direction. This tale is a perfect blend of old school storytelling with modern sensibilities.

It’s well written and well illustrated, but Action Comics #1087 did zero for me. I’ve never been a fan of Clark as Superboy, to me it undercuts his first outing as Superman - setting this story in Metropolis undercuts that even more. The appearance of Ma & Pa Kent was also confusing … I know since Smallville they have been seen as younger … but they way they were drawn here, it looked like Ma Kent was Clarks younger sister. I like Waid’s writing and I really wanted to like this book … but I just can’t bring myself to embrace this new Suberboy. It’s no fault of the creative team … it’s just not my bag, so I’ll rate it accordingly.

Solid but not spectacular first issue with a certain timeless quality that is probably the only way Waid could approach Superboy. But if the Kents are in their 30s or 40s then, just how old is Clark Kent now?

It was okay, kind of was more excited to finish it just to be done. Art is lame, feels like a corporate safe direction, I'm not into Waids style really, and after his horrible Phantom Zoners run and Xa-Du I'm not particularly excited about this. I mean the only nice part was when Pa Kent helped Superboy focus in on the fight but otherwise the plot is pretty stupid and again the art sucks. Feels like a baby 🍼 Disney cartoon.
