DC are looking to make some traction with this book. For some it will be a great celebration of a classic character and his family, for others it will be seen as practice run for Detective Comics #1000, although the real party should be Detective #1027, and for others this will be seen as cheese on toast, that doesn't meet the requirement to spend so much on one issue. I'd been looking forward to this celebration of Superman for months (if not longer) and this book did not disappoint. Today really felt like true observance of Superman and what he has meant to the world over the years. Written as it is, as an anthology it is hard to judge pace or story construction, however most of the short pieces in this issue stand on their own merit. Tomasi, Snyder, Johns and Donner being the heads of the class with strong offerings from King, Simonson and Jurgens. This is a milestone marking issue and being that it is held to quite a different standard, more celebratory than storytelling, however Action Comics #1000 delivers in ways most of these types of tomes fall flat. Great celebration of the one who started it all, but it without hesitation if you are a fan of the character. You are sure to at least enjoy most of the stories and pinups, and find a few to love. Dont bother if you are only interested in seeing Bendis' big setup for his run, because its incredibly hackneyed retcon by crow-bar, and not the fun Jason Todd kind of crow bar, more the creatively bankrupt and trying hard to make headlines kind.

Fantastic! Jurgens’ story and art (first story) were terrific, and set the tone for the rest of the book. Tomasi and Gleason’s story was also strong. But Bendis’ story - setting up Man of Steel - was Super-cool. I can’t wait for the mini-series. Tom King and Clay Mann’s story was also a solid one. Scott Snyder’s, on the other hand, was not good.

This was a Super issue. I enjoyed reading every story. The art was beautiful, and the stories encapsulated the meaning of Superman very well. I couldn't wait for this issue to be released, and it did not disappoint. I look forward to 1000 more. If you are on the fence for purchasing this issue, buy it while you can, so you won't regret it later. Enjoy!

Really there is nothing to pick at in this true anniversary issue. It's a celebration of Superman and his many iterations over 80 years. Every story feels like a Superman story, and every page looks like a Superman comic. There are classic characters, hopeful (yet classically cheesy) dialogue, villain fights, touching moments, and absolutely stunning artwork. The only story I couldn't fully appreciate was the Snyder-Albuquerque one. It looked great and had an interesting concept, but I didn't fully understand the background actions near the end of the short story. Overall, very much worth every penny, and I appreciate that DC kept the price relatively low for such an occasion and the all-star talent.

Welcome to the Oblivion Bar where the first round is on me and the pretzels are free! Be warned: like the pickled eggs at the bar, this issue is going to get SPOILED rotten. So I normally open with a quick rundown of what happened in the issue BUT this issue was a bit different. You see; it was a bunch of little stories that described what truly makes Superman so dang Super. They really were all well done. Now, my personal two favorites were Neil Adams and Patrick Gleason’s. Gleason’s showed Superman stuck in a time loop fighting criminals and villains from throughout his 80 years with FANTASTIC ART!!!! Eventually, Superman escapes to stop Vandal Savage with the help of ..... himself. And, did I mention the art was fantastic? Hi s short story paid homage to everyone who wrote Superman, as well as the character and villains throughout the years while giving some of it an updated look. It was Awesome! And then we had Neil Adam’s classic Lex Luthor vs Superman story but with a 1970’s comic twist. Superman offers up a chess match out of the blue and challenged Lex, which of course he accepted. Superman manages to defeat Lex but Lex traps him in kryptonite chains. But with a little help from Mister Miracle’s motherbox, Superman manages to escape. Personally, I loved the classic feel of this story. No hero would just drop by now in 2018 and offer to play a game of Parcheesi with their sworn enemy. But that’s how comics worked back then. And as crazy as it may sound, we occasionally need a little Parcheesi in our lives. Every comic can’t be earth shattering and world ending can it? Each story was pretty good but as a runner up, I did like Geoff Johns take on the car from Action Comics 1 but from the perspective of the driver. That was also very creative with fantastic art while also paying homage to the crux and foundation of what makes Superman who he still is today. And ultimately, that was the point of this 1000th. This issue shows us all exactly what Superman has shown us for the past 80 years; how humans SHOULD act in this world. And the irony has always been, he isn’t even human.

It's hard to believe, but we're here, with Superman's 1000th issue. What a time to be alive, and celebrate the long and successful life of Clark Kent. A lot has changed throughout last 80 years - there was the second world war, rise and fall of the eastern bloc, computers shrinked down from apartment sized vacuum tube giants to something we can hold in one hand, and humans been to space, just to mention couple of things. You know what didn't change, though? Superman. He always stood for the same core values and principles, standing for those who are in need. He is a symbol of hope, and a true role model to follow, even if we don't have any super powers. This historic issue features couple different stories celebrating the rich legacy of Supes, with nods to his first appearance (elegantly simple story by Johns), and other iconic stories, like The Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come (Tomasi's work). There's also a solid dose of pure sweetness, like the opening story written by Dan Jurgens, concluding with a mass cameo of Superman's closest friends (well, for the most part, which makes the scene even better). There may not be something as emotional and heartwarming as Superman's #39, but nonetheless, I believe eneryone should find something they like in this anniversary collection - it sure is diverse. My only problem is related to the very last story - written by Michael Bendis. And don't get me wrong - it reads very well, it looks beautiful (after all, it's drawn by Jim Lee), and definitely made me feel hopeful about Bendis joining DC (since he's partially, among many others, responsible for Marvel's regressive downfall) but his story was a teaser, not a self contained "thank you". I definitely will pick The Man of Steel when it comes out, I just wish this issue was, from the beginning to the end, a celebration of Superman's history, not a ferecast of what's to come, even if that something looks very promising. more

It's finally here. It only took 80 years, but issue #1000 is finally here. And it is packed with Superman goodness. I think that every aspect of Superman that made him and makes him Superman for so many people is addresed here, even the red underwear... I mean the red trunks. In this anniversary issue we get eleven different stories centered around Man of Steel, including story by Brian Bendis that sets up a much greater intrigue. Brian Bendis' story is a good and solid start for his run on Superman. It introduces a new villain with some interesting and intriguing ties to Kal-El. I'm anxious to see where this story leads. As for the rest of the stories, the one I liked the most is the one by Peter Tomasi and Pat Gleason. We get t o see modern day Superman relive in some manner all 80 years of his history. I just think thats a really cool concept. Happy Birthday Man of Steel and 80 more years. more

I am not a big Superman fan. He has always been a backdrop character for me when reading JL books and I rarely delve into his stories. Though a book hitting #1000 is special. No one can deny that Superman is a legacy. This is a great book for issue #1000 and it is discussed why Superman is special. Bendis's run does not inspire me that Superman will continue its upward momentum of being good, but Bendis gets his shot. I am just not sure he is digging very deep when teasing his story. That being said this issue is a great look from start to finish on who Superman is and why many love him. I will not be continuing this series and I will likely just keep up Superman in the relaunch of Justice League. I am also looking forward to reading the ne w Titans book after No Justice, but DC did really great with this book. more

I really, really enjoyed this issue quite a bit. It was sweet, charming and fun which is what a Superman comic should always be. Its a beautiful love letter to an amazing character. Everyone brought there A game here yes even Bendis...to a certain extent. It was also great meeting Tomasi at Midtown Comics and having him sign my copy of this historic comic. Class act just like Superman himself. All all in great a solid issue. As Lois would say "Happy Birthday you Big Lug"

Some of the stories ended way abruptly but the Dan Jurgens story is definitely a standout. Tom King imagining Earth being destroyed after the Sun supernovas was an interesting take. Unlike some of you here, I'm actually kind of worried about Bendis. He's introducing a weird villain that's trying to take credit for exterminating all the Kryptonians? That wipes out a lot of the backstory of Superman's origin, where it was the Kryptonians themselves that doomed their planet forcing Jor-El to send his only son to Earth as a beacon of hope. I don't think Bendis would re-write that origin with a sketchy villain but then again Bendis has written some stuff at Marvel that's turned that whole company into kind of a mess... But "Fresh Start" in May, amirite?? more

I love the first story on how Superman gets the key to Metropolis while everyone helps him out by Dan Jurgens, Peter J Tomasi's story on how Superman traveled forward in time to reunite with his family, Superman beating Lex Luthor in chess. Geoff Johns, Scott Snyder and Tom King were fine and forgettable, which is surprising since they're great comic book writers. Surprisingly Louise Simonson's sorry was good. Paul Dini was confusing, Bendis ws decent, but my favorite would have to be Faster than a Speeding Bullet by Brad Meltzer.

Does what it says on the tin. It celebrates Superman. If you are looking for something new and different and profound, nope. If you are looking for a long epic story, nope. But if you are looking for the right mix of current and classic writers and artists, you've come to the right place. My highlights include Johns, Donner and Copiel; Tomasi and Gleason; and Dini and Garcia-Lopez. The only dud here was Snyder's effort. As for Bendis...the jury is still out, but his usual tics are on view, take them or leave them.

There is some good story, some weird story, some I don't fully understand and then the bendis one. For a superman anniversary at this price I'm a little disappointed. Cover - I took the Allred one. Nice and a little related. 1.5/2 Writing - I don't like than all story didn't give the sentiment of something bigger & more link. I'm not fond of Superman in the hand of Bendis easer ! But some story are still great 2/3 Arts - All the arts are perfect. 3/3 Feeling - I would have liked a only story bigger & more connected for a real anniversary. 1/2

This low rating is 100% due to the new kid on the block. Bendis's contribution to this issue was sadly out of place. Where the first six stories closed the book on the Man of Steel's first 80 years with love and appreciation, Bendis should have offered a story that welcomed Superman into the next 80 with hope and optimism. Instead we're offered this trite preview with a retcon gimmick, which should have been saved for Free Comic Book Day.

This review just pertains to the Bendis story. Personally, I think Jurgens is one of the best Superman writers ever, but I guess he isn’t the celebrity Bendis is, so it’s ashame he got bumped on this title. His Lois and Clark mini, Superman Reborn, Oz Effect and Booster Shot arcs I thoroughly enjoyed. This set up story by Bendis was meh. It debuted a very uninteresting, one dimensional villain, in my opinion. And of course Bendis needs to retcon Superman’s origin to grab headlines and create controversy. Jurgens didn’t resort to those tactics and I think Bendis has his work cut out for him following after Jurgens. I am definitely on board to see if he can do it.

Eight dollars for a twelve page superman story by Bendis. I especially like how on his very first issue he is already making major continuity changes. I can't wait for him to make Superman gay! As a Marvel fan, I am perfectly happy to see Bendis go to DC. Jim Lee's art is the only reason I didn't give this book a lower rating.

There are 68 other pages in this book that deserve a much high score than you ha e this. Jurgen's story is a great tribute to supes not to mention the other 6 stories that were good. Why would you buy a book for only 1/7 of the total book. This book is definitely worth the price as it's only 10 cents a page

Oz Effect in my opinion was not a retcon. It was part of Doomsday Clock wherein Dr Manhattan plucked Jor El before Krypton blew up. I’m not even sure if that was even Jurgens idea or part of Geoff Johns plotting. Bendis is altering the fundsmental origin of Krypton exploding. That means the whole basis of Jor El trying to convince the people of Krypton the planet is going to explode in question, so did he not know this villain was truly responsible?
