DC are looking to make some traction with this book. For some it will be a great celebration of a classic character and his family, for others it will be seen as practice run for Detective Comics #1000, although the real party should be Detective #1027, and for others this will be seen as cheese on toast, that doesn't meet the requirement to spend so much on one issue. I am going to side with aspirational elements, the inspirational elements that Superman, no Clark Kent stands for. Read Full Review

Action Comics #1000 is a love letter to Superman, pure and simple. Its the kind of comic that a person could give to a some hypothetical person who has no idea who Superman is and by the end, theyd not only understand the character, but have fallen in love with him and gotten excited about the future of the character. Its worth every penny of the $7.99 cover price and not just for Superman fans. Read Full Review

There are other stories in here, including the 'new' Curt Swan art that are other interesting takes on Superman and his legend. In case you didn't get it, I loved this issue. I don't know where Bendis is bringing us. I am bummed that the current creative teams are getting axed. But for now, this book reminded me of where we have been and why I love Superman. At the end of the day though, when I finished reading Action Comics #1000, I smiled. I smiled because of the pop culture history that was made. I smiled because the more I grow up, the more I realize that Superman is the hero I needed growing up and the hero I continually strive to be. I'd been looking forward to this celebration of Superman for months (if not longer) and this book did not disappoint. Today really felt like true observance of Superman and what he has meant to the world over the years. It was an anthology, so some stories were always going to be stronger than others, and I definitely wanted to see way more Lois Lane, but overall I'm glad I not only got to read this book, but be apart of comics fandom during its release. In any case, Action Comics #1000 is everything I hoped it would and more. The writers, artists, inkers, color artists, and letterers all do pristine work, and even the weaker parts were still very enjoyable and only weak by comparison to the incredible work done in this comic. All in all,Action Comics #1000 is a celebration of all things Superman. Each writer brings something unique in their story, focusing on different aspects of the Man of Steel's character and lore while the art from each artist is outstanding, capturing the emotion and delivering some great, memorable visuals. This isn't just a book for Superman fans, but one that explains to any non-fans or those curious about Superman why he's remained such an iconic character for eight decades. He's the grandfather of superheroes, yet he still remains as relevant today, if not more so, than he did in 1938. If you haven't already, do yourself a favour and pick upAction Comics #1000. Written as it is, as an anthology it is hard to judge pace or story construction, however most of the short pieces in this issue stand on their own merit. Tomasi, Snyder, Johns and Donner being the heads of the class with strong offerings from King, Simonson and Jurgens. This is a milestone marking issue and being that it is held to quite a different standard, more celebratory than storytelling, however Action Comics #1000 delivers in ways most of these types of tomes fall flat. Sure DC pick the best of the best talent-wise when it came time to put this super shindig together and that cannot help but pay off. Read Full Review

If sales figures are any indication, more comic book readers will be picking up Action Comics than almost any comic book in recent memory -- especially one at its hefty price point. Action Comics #1000 isn't without its disappointments. A lackluster plot twist prevents Brian Bendis' first DC story from making the impact it should, and in general the short length of these stories tends to limit their scope. Still, there's a lot of heart in these pages, and no shortage of gorgeous artwork. It's impossible not to be moved by the many loving Superman tributes these creative teams have put together.
