Unity #0

Unity #0 is a compelling story that successfully captures the foundation that Unity is built on, and shows the need for them throughout different periods of time. The story got off to a somewhat slow start and felt like a typical World War I story with added superheroes but each character became memorable as events unfolded and Gilad's narration took center stage. And the artwork was perfect for the tone of the story as it captured both the action sequences and somber moments effectively. The team members may have changed over time, and even now in the aftermath of the Armor Hunters event but what hasn't changed is the fact that it will always consist of those willing to give their all to defend what is right. This really doesn't feel like a zero issue. I don't know if it's exactly building a bigger story that's coming, but more than likely it is. It does successfully build the history of the team and tells a complete and interesting story. Hell I would love to read more one-shot stories like this taking chunks out of the team's past because it's just interesting to see the Valiant Universe line up with our own history. If anything this issue should be commended for not taking place during WWII. Read Full Review

Valiant continues to exemplify what zero issues are all about. Unity #0 tells a story that provides some history to the main series, but can easily stand alone as a one and done issue. With this issue, Matt Kindt skillfully sets the groundwork for the tale he's been spinning for just under a dozen issues, while simultaneously hinting at the future of the things to come. Unity #0 is another zero issue worth picking up, though it does have some places where it could have been better to make us feel truly invested in the story. Like X-O Manowar #0, Unity #0 gave us an idea of what this team stood for back then, and what it continues to stand for now in a world which is rebuilding from a cosmic war they never saw coming. Visually, artist Cary Nord does an excellent job rendering the proceedings, his characters effectively straddling the line between retro and something more. The atmosphere he creates, through the use of body language and detailed backdrops, is top notch, effectively capturing both the good times and the bad. When joined with the colors provided courtesy of Jose Villarrubia, issue #0 takes on an almost fantastical air, the book's visuals hauntingly picturesque.Issue #0 offers little in the way of what's to come, but by offering a snapshot of what came before Kindt opens up the narrative to a host of possibilities. While Gilad's final musings are ultimately hopeful, his time on Unit Y showed that even super heroes can be beaten. Whether this is a precursor of what's to come remains to be seen, but either way the tale of Unit Y is not a wasted one. Read Full Review

Unity #0 may not be the usual sort of tale to expect from this series, but given the fact Eternal Warrior will return to his own solo series come next month, it's fitting to see yet another era in his immortal life. The issue also gives a different take on teamwork, with Unit Y being nothing like Unity. Recommended. Read Full Review

Like I said, great standalone story, great art, no disagreement there. Still, I can't help but ask myself "Why", as in why did I need to know that about Eternal Warrior? Or why is this important to the Unity mythos? Without knowing Valiant's marketing plan, I can only assume the rest of the current roster will get a similar treatment at some point in the series, and maybe this issue will make more sense in that larger framework. If not, well at least we've got a great single-issue story, even if it doesn't mean anything. Read Full Review

All told, "Unity" #0 is a successful addition to Valiant's universe, but not necessarily a successful issue in and of itself. Despite its flaws, it's left me wanting to see more of the Unit Y/Unity history, so the creative team has done something right. Read Full Review

Italia - le origini della squadra. Il primo vero gruppo capitanato da Gilad che pur vedendo cadere i membri del team si rassegna sapendo che dovrà ancora proteggere la terra. Veramente una storia toccante, dai toni cupi, accompagnati da disegni davvero eccezionali.

While $4 is a bit much for what Valiant delivers, this is a good stand alone tale. It reveals some of team Unity's history, even though it doesnt seem to apply to the current run. I enjoyed it.

Meh, wasn't very good. The art was rough and unrefined, the story was bland and uninteresting. I'm someone who is very interested in WWI, but this actually has very little to do with WWI and this takes a little too much creative license with Breaker's inventing skills. It doesn't help much that I don't seem to like the Eternal Warrior either, he just doesn't have much personality and is constantly spewing the same narration over and over throughout his role in Unity.
