This was ok at best and all over the place at worse. Although we know who killed Wanda and got a new status quo for Krakoa, it feels like it missed the mark completely. The Trial of Magneto might be the biggest misnomer in comics this year, if not the last five. Read Full Review

You Don't Read Comics - David Harth

    Dec 29, 2021

X-Men: The Trial Of Magneto #5 has a good ending, but it also shows just how bad this book really has been throughout its run. It would have been a fine mystery book, but Marvel apparently had other plans for it, and it hurt things immensely. The ending doesnt do much to redeem the story and is even more frustrating because it could have been a great story if it had been done differently. Wernecks art is uneven, which is basically this book in microcosm. This comic is the ultimate missed opportunity, and its ending cant save it, even if its the best part of this five-issue tale. X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #5 brings this chaotic mini-series to a close with unsatisfying results. The comic answers who killed Wanda, but the reveal is not as impactful as expected. On top of that, the comic adds a big revelation on top of the other that doesn't make things clearer but more confusing and convoluted than this series already is. Read Full Review

I don't love this but I don't hate it the way many of your seem to. Importantly, I can see where the importance of this in the overall Krakoan storyline and so I think maybe that's why.

Once again I'm very happy I didn't have the same experience as others reading this. I thought this was a fantastic ending to this story. I found this to be very moving and beautifully written and drawn. This was redemption with huge implications to krakoa. I for one loved this whole story and found the artwork to be amazing

You know what? This was an enjoyable issue. It feels like Williams knew exactly how she wanted to end this series from the beginning (and I will say, it was actually quite a good concept), but it just felt like she had no idea how to connect the dots and get us to the desired ending smoothly. But at the end of the day, despite an extremely messy couple issues in the middle, this series managed to end strong. I really like Wanda's redemption here. And I finally get the title now! TRIAL of Magneto, but not that kind of trial. Clever clever. I still don't like it. This was a book about Wanda and the title should've been something more Wanda-centric. Making it about Magneto was misleading from the start and I think contributed to people's disap more

I can't believe I'm saying this but I... kind of liked this? I mean, the "mystery" is total bullshit and the title of the book is still disingenuous, but I felt like here Leah played to her only saving grace as a writer: her X-Men knowledge. She basically reverted Toad to the loyal servant of Magneto he was in the beginning of the X-Men. Toad has moved on from that, it's true, but it's also true that he's been receiving very little attention lately and as someone who likes Toad, I appreciated the spotlight he got here. I hope The Brotherhood gets back together in the Pit somehow, Sabretooth is already there, Orphan Maker and Nanny are there, too, there's potential for those characters to come back with a vengeance. I liked Magneto's charact more

The ending wasn't as bad as I had expected. That's not to say it was good, but it could have been awful considering the first four. I give this issue a 7, but the story altogether is a generous 4. The killer reveal was cheap and lacking in substance. We haven't seen much, if any, of Toad in Krakoa, so I was let down that he was nothing more than a fall guy. I said it before, but it also made X-Factor come across as inept and awful detectives. Watching Toad get sent to the pit really left a bad taste; Wanda's "redemption" seems dirty now, considering it was based on his sacrifice. I did love seeing Thunderbird come back and I was happier still to see the Crucible get replaced. It always seemed too barbaric for Krakoa and with Apocolyp more

This whole series was a bit of a jumble of disparate ideas and it mostly comes together by the end. I think pretty much everything related to Wanda and the resurrection protocols really worked while the actual "trial" or whodunnit portion of the story, fell flat on its face. Toad comes out of nowhere as the guilty party, and while you can kind of see why it works due to their Brotherhood connection, the reveal mostly lands with a thud. Especially with the further reveal that Wanda wanted all of this to happen so she could enhance the resurrection protocols. I wasn't particularly satisfied with the ending for Toad either, as he's really more of a hired gun in an assisted suicide rather than the cold, calculating murderer he was treated a more

I'm torn. I really want someone to follow this story up and save Toad. But I really *really* don't want that someone to be Leah Williams. I have no problems with the author's identity or politics. I have a big problem with the story structure she always uses, which is: 1) Establish problem. 2) Spend several issues hanging purple prose and/or comedy around characters who don't do anything. 3) Solve problem via deus ex machina. I'll still rate this finale close to average, because it makes a lot of welcome and intriguing upgrades to Krakoa's status quo. Plus it's drawn decently.

What sounds like it could have been an interesting, great story is muddled by a run that had no consistent tone/characters/focus. This needed more space, needed more focus. Trial of Magneto was not IT.

I can't help but wonder if I would have liked this as the closing arc of X-Factor (which I enjoyed) or if the story would have been this big a mess whether it was turned into an event or not, but regardless this is a car accident. The idea of the ending isn't terrible, but the execution is both limp and incoherent in a way that undercuts anything good about it.

Easily one of the most pathetic and embarrassing X-Stories I've ever read. Not even Lost got to this level of convoluted bullshit. P.S. Fuck Wanda and whoever still writes stories about that garbage can of a character.

I feel bad for Williams because all the incels and sad puppy types are always cunning for her and Tini Howard. So I'm hesitant to write a bad review. However, this was a terrible story arc that was convoluted and went nowhere. Just like with X-Factor, Williams was given a solid premise, and she squandered it on "character-driven" narrative that treads water the entire time.

I'm giving it a 1 because I can't give it a 0. this story seems to be the start of a bunch of poorly written stories to come to please mcu fans. Wanda's personality is a door, the heroes of the council have the most meaningless votes in the world, two telepaths in the council and nobody read Groxo's mind to know if he was telling the truth? This sucks. this Leah Williams should be fired, she can't sustain a story without bait and appeal to the mcu audience. The only good thing is that it's over, and the bad thing is that unfortunately this horrible writer is going to write another magazine for the little scarlet witch. May God have mercy on Mrs. maximoff's fans
