Jul 22, 2026X-Men: The Hellfire Murder #1 is yet another example of the X-Men office trying to play to nostalgia and falling on their face. The overall plot of the comic isn’t actually bad, but it barely focuses on it, robbing it any of stakes. The character stuff is good and keeps the story from being a complete waste of time, but other than that, it’s not a great comic. The Hellfire Galas were meant to be jumping on points and this book sort of does that, but it is also is kind of opaque to any fan who isn’t already reading the X-books. If you are, this book is fine but it makes a lot of mistakes that keep it from being interesting. Read Full Review

I liked all of the Hellfire Galas and even last year’s lackluster Hellfire Vigil, but this legitimately felt like a bootleg comic to me. I think having too many writers involved here made Wolverine’s voice feel out of character, and I wasn’t a fan of how Jubilee was written either. The murder victim felt ridiculously obvious, and the plot twists felt like they came out of nowhere. I love the stuff Jed and (to an extent) even Gail are doing in their own books, but this $8 comic felt superfluous and farcical. The whole X-Office can do better than this.

They really let this murder slide, didn’t they? After all, it’s only a dead villain.
If not for the incredibly anticlimactic ending, I would have given this book a relatively good rating. The art is mostly fine, even beautiful, and the writing felt surprisingly consistent despite the different writers. That ending though is a huge problem, and quite symptomatic for what makes the X-books so bad in recent years.
