X-Men Of Apocalypse #1

Overall, X-Men of Apocalypse #1 is a joy to read. The writing, art, and lettering all complement each other to visually create an X-Men book that separates itself from either past or present books to talk about. Fans of the Apocalypse X-Men and current X-Men wont be disappointed with this comic book. Be sure to pick this one up and your local comic book store or where copies are sold online. As a huge fan of the X-Men in the '90s, this issue going back this 1995 version of the team, was a lot of fun. It was cool to see bone-claw Wolverine again. That said, Loeb doesn't drop readers too far into the weeds of that old continuity; it's just set-dressing, pretty fun set-dressing at that. We learn about the AoA X-Men's mission in the 616 universe, and it's extremely predictable. I'm not going to spoil the specifics of the mission (since if you're reading this, you already know why they're there, you just don't know how they want to accomplish the mission), but I will say two things about it: it's copying numerous other X-Men stories you've read before, and it also makes perfect sense. X-Men of Apocalypse #1 is for the hardcore X-Men fans and really for the hardcore that long for the Age of Apocalypse. It's a weird return to the world, especially with the "Age of Revelation currently underway and with an ad for that storyline in this issue, it almost makes you think this is tied into that in some way. Who knows where this goes, but, like Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion, it feels like a mini-series whose end results will be more entertaining than what happens getting to them. Read Full Review

If you're searching for a first issue that delivers a satisfying story on its own, move along. This one's busy drawing up blueprints and leaving the actual building for later. With formulaic writing and too much setup, X-Men of Apocalypse #1 is a middling investment that's tough to recommend unless you really love timeline drama and can forgive another helping of "heroes fight first, ask later. And some level this is all Rachel Summers fault. The first of the time traveling stories was a brief way to show the darkness that would be potential if things didn't go well for the X-Men. When Rachel came through to 1984, she opened the door for a lot of time traveling characters to make their way across the pages of the X-Men. Her story was really compelling. Really brilliantly crafted on so many levels by Claremont everything since that has been needlessly, complicated and confusing. It loses the threat of its meaning when so many different people are traveling in so many different ways and timelines bumped into each other. It's just one big hopeless mess. Read Full Review

I may not be a fan of the Age of Apocalypse, but in times when most X-titles look like dog shit and read even worse, I favor a well drawn AoA title over the 616 line anytime. And indeed, X-Men of Apocalypse feels like a breath of fresh but familiar air from a better era. Jeph Loeb's story is simple but works, and DiMeo's artwork just pops off the page. XMOA is great 90s fun, and part of it may be just because it doesn't have to carry the baggage of twenty to thirty years of bullshit stories. Please, Marvel, put this team on the main X-book!
