Wolverine #38

Wolverine #38 is a great team up issue featuring one of Logan's oldest and closest wartime friends. Given he state of Krakoa this issue feels important as it wraps up what Orchis has done with what's left of mutant culture while ensuring it'll be preserved for whatever era comes next. It's fitting the "Last Mutant Standing story arc has Wolverine going on solo missinos as the biggest mutant loner is best at wrapping up loose ends. Read Full Review

Overall, this issue is action-packed and fun. It's exactly what you'd want out of a book with Cap and Wolverine teaming up. There is plenty of fun action from both characters and it feels connected to what currently is happening in the other books but also standalone enough for casual readers to pick up the issue and enjoy it based on the cover alone. Wolverine #38 pairs the two up again, this time to bring down an auction (a framing device Percy's run seems to love) of stolen Krakoan artifacts. Some of the panels are great throwbacks to the entirety of X-Men's Krakoan era, but for the casual reader it's always fun to see these two mow their way through a legion of goons. Read Full Review

In contrast to #37's triple serving of action ideas, #38 concentrates on a single mission. It's a different structural style, but the creators carry it off with equal aplomb. Cap is perfect, as are Logan's ruminations on their relationship. The art's still formidable. While the characters are occasionally stiff (particularly in the face), they're surrounded by impeccable detail and polish. There are some daringly inventive layouts, too.

An enjoyable and self-contained Wolverine and Captain America team-up. Full of great callbacks to previous comics, Wolverine and Cap’s past, the whole Krakoa storyline and previous Wolverine storylines. A couple of really awesome pages. The whole pages and set-pieces are really great. A really great page as Wolverine is fighting his way down and Cap is moving across. Unfortunately a when the masks come off, the close ups of faces are a little off. The story is self-contained, which is probably a little bit of a shame because it lacked a sense of larger importance. Sure, getting weapons away from bad people is important, but it happens a little too neatly.

While I do feel like this storyline feels a bit like filler, this issue was still an enjoyable and entertaining Wolverine & Captain America team-up. I like their relationship and dynamic, so it's usually a good time seeing the two of them together. With Black Panther coming in the next issue, I'm interested as to whether or not this arc will have a larger narrative, or if it's just meant to have Wolverine team up with different non-mutant heroes.

I really enjoy a good Captain America/Wolverine team-up, and while this one is a pretty standard affair with the pair taking out bad guys, there are things about the story that temper my enjoyment of it. The first is the art. I have had a very hard time liking the artwork in this series, but given the usual subject, I have tolerated it for the most part. But it is not a good look for Cap at all, especially when he is in his civilian gear. The faces just don't look good when they're not covered by masks. The second is the dynamic between Wolverine and Cap. The two characters have a great deal of history together, and I'm not certain that Percy gets their complicated relationship right. Steve doesn't sound quite like himself at times and Log an's commentary on their dynamic is hit and miss. The plot of the story was pretty good for this issue, and I enjoyed looking at the many Easter eggs on the pages featuring the Legacy House, even if the appearance of some of the auction items didn't make much sense, given their presence in other books. more

Logan’s holding patter continues with another solo mission, this time featuring a team-up with Captain America. These are fun one-offs, but I’m ready for Wolverine to get back with his X-Force team members though how/if that ends up happening long-term remains to be seen with the upcoming Wolverine vs. Sabretooth minievent. We get nice homages to different points of the Krakoan era, but this has the feeling of a feel-good mashup of Marvel legends than anything relevant to the Fall of X endgame.
