The Mighty Thor #12

Mighty Thor #12 is a well-crafted story that could be easily interpreted as a piece of Norse mythology. It is incredibly well written and beautifully drawn. Jason Aaron is one of Marvel's best writers right now and he shows it in this comic. Russell Dauterman is one of Marvel's best artists right now, but in this issue, he makes way for the work of Irving Frazer who does a stunning job of creating a comic that is visually engaging and uniquely stylized through color and technique to give an epic and ancient feel. By the end of the issue, there is a certain air of mystery about Mjolnir, and an almost heavenly glow surrounds it. As a standalone issue, it is an astounding throwback to Norse Mythology. It is towards the end of the issue where the story seems to contradict what we thought we knew, but it could also be that Jason Aaron hasn't finished telling this story and may be waiting for future stories to continue this origin. Either way, this is still a great comic, but it's something you may have mixed feelings about. I know I do. Aaron's history and forging is appropriately epic, with plenty of God battles, thunder strikes and space sharks. Beyond the initial entertainment, it also offers a unique look at the hammer's temperament and relationship with its wielder, something Aaron clearly sets up to be further explored with the upcoming Unworthy Thor #1. This issue is an interesting interlude with gorgeous the art. I love what Jason Aaron is doing with Thor, he's modernizing the characters like no one has ever done before.

An intriguing idea but some stories are just left better untold. Like Yoda, for instance. A Yoda origin movie would never work because his origin is always better in people’s minds. Same thing happened twice with Wolverine

I'm not a big fan of these tales of old type stories. It's not bad by any means, this one was decent, it just doesn't do a whole lot for me and I'm more interested to read Thor's next adventure instead.
