Secret Avengers #5

As before, Michael Walsh does the pencils while Matthew Wilson does the colours, VC's Clayton Cowles does the letters and Tradd Moore does the cover with Matthew Wilson. The art in this issue was a bit more on the sombre, shady, dark, indistinct side than it usually is, and that kind of made me didn't enjoy the comic as much as I usually do. And given that the script itself doesn't have all that much of its traditional humour in place, it means that the artwork is even more sombre in relation. There are some really good moments here, such as Modok's expressions, which are just too awesome. Or the bottom panel sequence of Hawkeye practicing his archery which are rendered really nicely, or all of Maria Hill's character-work in its entirety. Read Full Review

I said it before and I'll say it again, this is my favorite AVENGERS series. Ales Kot gives us a great mix of action, espionage, humor, and superheroics all in one comic. Michael Walsh and Matthew Wilson's art and colors always impresses. There's a lot of secrets being kept from the rest of the team and the series is living up to that angle. There's no telling what will happen next and that feeling of suspense is what keeps me coming back for more. That, and M.O.D.O.K., of course. Read Full Review

While these serious events are happening,the writer Ales Kot is throwing in little jokes that seem forced at times. For example, the first time Hawkeye is shown, a lower third in the panel makes a joke about how Hawkeye is similar to the green guy on TV, only cooler. The same panel also makes a joke about how no one knows who Nick Fury is. This would be fine, but a later panel shows Nick Fury again with a lower third that says “We were kidding earlier. We totally know who this is. It's Nick Fury! Hill's right hand!” At this moment I expected Kot to pop out of my pageand yell, “Get it? I made a joke about Nick Fury! I totally got you earlier. Wait, where are you going? Don't leave!” Read Full Review

Coby's Top 5 Comic of the Week!

This week, Secret Avengers #5 drops... and it totally lives up to the hype. It takes the Caramel Gelato story from Secret Avengers #3, combines it with The Pregnant Fury from Secret Avengers #4 and Coulson and Nick Fury's antics in the Original Sin: Secret Avengers Infinite Comic, mixes it up with some who-dun-it mystery, gives M.O.D.O.K. some actual character development, and continues to be one of the most interesting and entertaining comics available.
