Phoenix #4

I felt the art style perfectly complemented the comic's tone. The vibrant colors of Jean and the Phoenix Force brought even more depth to an already powerful narrative. My favorite moments were whenever Jean tapped into the Phoenix Force. She was illustrated and colored so beautifully that she truly felt like a cosmic entity. This issue nails the tension between characters! The dialogue feels natural and grounded, and the way the characters bounce off each other feels so authentic. You can see how they all have different motives and it just makes everything so much more compelling.

This series continues to get better and better. This issue isn’t held back as much as previous issues due to the narration of the other character. It’s more focused on Jean and her struggles to let loose from time to time and not only focus on being the cosmic savior. Stephanie continues to do a great job in writing Jean in this series and having her interact with other well known iconic characters is always fun. The art isn’t the worst by any means but I still wish that Marvel would finally hire Russell Dauterman or Pepe or R.B. Silva to draw this series. Fingers crossed that one of those amazing artists will eventually helm the book. The only drawback is that I feel that these books can be at least 5 or 6 pages longer.

This series started slow for me, I didn't love the #1 but each issue has gotten better and better. The art is still just ok, but the writing is outstanding. I loved the entire conversation between Jean and Carol, the galactic council meeting was fine and Gorr coming at Jean is interesting. I would echo the comment from another reviewer here and say it seems like the issues should be a little longer. I dunno if it's shorter than other books or if it just seems that way. I was a little dubious of "Jean decides to take a break from the X-Men to drift the cosmos" as a concept for a new series, but it's definitely getting good.

One of the strongest issues thus far, in my opinion. Miracle's art worked pretty well here for me, especially when he drew Jean closer to the panel. The story was good, as well. Carol's appearance added a more grounded touch to the story, and I enjoyed the dialogue and fight against Gorr. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out in the next issue.

I do think this series is improving. The only problem I have with it is the core concept-- I'm not sold on Jean as a cosmic hero. What I love about Jean is her human side and her relationship with the X-Men. We're not seeing any of that which is a bit sad for me. I think the editors should consider giving her more earth time but releasing the Phoenix power when on earth to balance things out.
