Phoenix #11

Stephanie Phillips continues to impress with her ability to elevate Jean's story with every installment of this comic book run. Phillips proves to understand the character to such an amazing level, and uses that understanding to enhance Jean Grey to levels that I didn't think were possible before. I'm really looking forward to learning more about how Sara is alive, and how Jean is able to handle all these unanswered questions. Read Full Review

Phillips is mixing a few different things together in a way that seems to be developing a really comprehensive look at the character and what it is that she's going through. This is really difficult for a character that who's been around for the better part of a century. It's a noble effort to try to connect all of the various desperate aspects of who she's been over the decades and over the course of many different writers. I am definitely going to continue readingPhoenixto see where Phillips takes this Greyhaven arc. Roi Mercado is new to Marvel Comics, so hopefully their style will continue to strengthen and grow, and I am excited to see how their art develops throughout this arc. I hope that Sara gets to stick around in some capacity, and her return doesn't end up being a gimmick. I think Jean having her sister back, especially one living off of Earth, would introduce some interesting dynamics to the Phoenix's responsibilities on Earth versus the cosmos as a whole. Phoenix #11 starts off the new arc that takes Jean reuniting with one of the most important people in her life. Someone that we haven’t seen in years. It’s a surprising reunion that has been highly anticipated for many years. Fans of Jean’s lore will be thrilled by this and what’s to come. This new arc seems very promising. It’s definitely a refreshing and welcoming start to a series that has been an eventful cosmic ride. Stephanie continues to write Jean expertly. The new art Roi seems promising and hopefully will be consistent. I still hope to see Russell Dauterman, R.B Silva, or Stuart Immonen become the book’s official artist.

The use of symbolism in this issue is amazing. It’s so clever, you could go back and find hidden layers you missed the first time around. The narrative feels even richer when you start to notice the little visual or thematic motifs that are woven throughout the story.

After almost a year I thought I’d give this book another try. It hasn’t improved one bit. Stephanie Phillips is a terrible writer and the art, although less abstract than in earlier issues - looks “cute” in the worst way imaginable. It’s almost as if they reimagined the Phoenix Saga as a “magical girl” book. Horrible.
