Beyond The Panel - Jideobi Odunze
May 15, 2019Ironheart #6 was an excellent one-shot issue that I do admit we should be able to see more of from superhero books. We got a definite start to a story, and a finish. Riri continued to work on herself, and in the process Miles was also able to fix something about himself that we had the opportunity to follow here instead of having to look out for the next Champions or Spider-Man. Weird Science Marvel Comics - olddeserthymnal
May 15, 2019This issue continued to show Ewing's skills with dialogue, and as far as that aspect of the book is concerned I think she elevates the character of Riri to new heights. Likewise we are seeing more and more of Riri as a multi-faceted character who is starting to interact in her own awkward and funny way with the rest of her peers. The plot for this issue is something of a trifle however, and it won't leave the reader with much of an impact. So maybe best avoided for the casual reader, and one for those invested in the series to take in their stride as a character driven piece, light on plot development and with some top quality artwork. I like the chemistry between these two a lot. I think Eve L. Ewing is really good at dialogue, at least with Riri's special brand of anti-social. If only Bendis could have made her this likeable in his Iron Man run, where she would've gotten the most attention, instead of never really justifying the mantle switch and annoying Iron Man fans.

Riri accepts a mission to check up on Miles when he goes MIA for two weeks and rescues him from a timey-wimey trap. It's a rock-solid story combining several classic comics tropes that have become uncommon: the (nearly) self-contained one-shot, the crossover team-up, the one-and-done villain. They're used so effectively here that they make a deceptively persuasive argument in favor of resurrecting them. The secret is that the storytelling required to make them work is a lot trickier than it looks; this issue has really strong writing and art working very well together.
