Daredevil #12

Outside of the incredible chase sequence, the issue actually contains some pretty nice twists that made a story I was already invested in even stronger. It really shocked me how much Waid was able to pull the rug out from under my feet, keeping me so wrapped up in the story that I didnt see it coming while still making it totally plausible. While there seems to be more danger looming as we reach the conclusion, Waid chooses to give us a relatively happy ending in the meantime, giving long-time fans some nice pay off and suggesting that, just once, Matt might get a happy ending. Here is a creative team that is working perfectly in sync with one another to deliver a superhero saga with heart. The heroisreal. The villains are real. The stylish finale is mostly an action climax, Samnee forever placing his stamp on the city of some of the most famous car chases with Daredevil actually behind the wheel. This alone should make it worth the price of admission, but it the double twist in the tale (the kind Waid excels at) that keeps this issue gripping until its heartwarming final panels. Waid has shown readers what he can do with Daredevil and Matt Murdock. He's proven time and again that he can reinvent characters or provide a new perspective on matchups and pairings, but he continues to impress. "Daredevil" #12 contains a bit of a twist, a slightly surprising conclusion and a validation of the Stunt-Master name, proving that a good writer can make any character interesting. The most critical piece to Waid's writing Daredevil is that he never forgets to include the "man" in "The Man Without Fear." Were only a couple of months away from the Daredevil Netflix show, which should put Hornhead in the public eye more, at least with comic book fans. Waid and Samnee, the current creators of the Daredevil comic, are in great form as this spotlight approaches, offering excellent issues in both long and short arcs. Read Full Review

The fact that storylines that could be considered holding patterns are STILL this entertaining and satisfying is a credit to the incredible creative team. Its not always perfect, but I can never wait to see what happens next, and Im constantly impressed by how well they tell these stories of Murdock and company and with the incredible economy that theyre able to get at the real, emotional depths of the characters. Mark Waid uses the issue to put Matt Murdock in a place where he has to consider if hes become a washed-up hero. Its an angle I havent considered when the DD writes a book subplot began. But Daredevil has spent the last four years with Waid and Samnee in a new renaissance, propelling the book to critical and commercial acclaim. How crazy is Daredevil badass-driving a cabriolet with his extendible sticks?! Mark Waid is goddamn crazy and I cannot not love it. Apart from this incredible scene, the storyline ends with a big twist with a twisted man behind it all and a sort of epilogue that almost caused me to weep. This creative team mustn't be changed, ever.

A surprising twist, a crazy chase and an happy ending. Even if some moments give you pause to wonder how, you can't deny that that is a damn good comic.
