The Worlds Collide crossover is what most comic books should be when trying to tell a classic superhero story. Nothing is rushed or out of placed and each moment means something. Waid is using six issues total to tell this and he knows he doesn't have to be in a rush to get anywhere. And because he is the writer on both series, his love of every character just shines through. As I wrote above, this is the third chapter in the six-issue story arc and next chapter is in the Champions coming out in two weeks, before shifting back to the Avengers. I'm not really a fan of these multi-title story arcs, but Waid is handling everything very well and giving each team their share of the spotlight. Read Full Review

This Avengers and Champions crossover has a very '80s vibe to it, which isn't too surprising, given Mark Waid's involvement. Waid can handle a variety of tones, but he seems to be set on old-school super-heroics for the clash with the High Evolutionary. Read Full Review

I want to give this issue all the points just for an opening seen that replicates Planet of the Apes which was so much fun. After a couple issues of setup and seeing the characters having to deal with the tension between the teams this issue dives into the main plot of the crossover. We learn about what exactly the High Evolutionary is up too and what is behind the mysteries. Again I loved the subtle character moments like Ms Marvel trying to make the Avengers hold back before charging in blindly. Something she had been critical of and part of why she had left the team. There is also the moment with Nova trying to remind everyone that Counter-Earth is nothing new to him and to use that knowledge. Mark Waid seems to really be enjoying the ch aracters. I feel this to be a great example of showing why the new and old generations of the heroes have a right to exist. They are different characters that are growing in different ways when done right. This is one of the more successful Legacy starts for me. more

After a so-so last part, this story becomes a lot of old school fun now. What I expected out of Waid's run and haven't gotten as much as I wanted.

Waid is doing a fine job. Nothing earth shattering but just solid fun storytelling. Would like to see what happens next in Champions with Viv. Miss DelMundo and Saiz but Pina and Diaz hold their own here enough to keep me interested in the story.

Avengers continues to be a fun read. The art has been nothing short of awesome. While it is not an all time classic story, it is retro, it is fun and very interesting.

The plot unfolds at a snail's pace, a highly generic High Evolutionary minces on-stage, and Viv gets a big surprise. Right from the initial splash page, the visuals make it clear that this issue is constructed by talented creators running on cruise control, and Mark Waid's script lives down to that assessment. The plot has nuggets of promise and Viv's fate is genuinely intriguing, but this issue's primary purpose is clearly to make sure the arc ends up trade-sized. The portrait of the High Evolutionary is half-interesting; his delusions of godhood are exceptionally fragile and he's probably going to shatter like sugar glass as soon as Spidey rolls up and starts calling him "Herbie."
