John Romita Jr’s art was always going to polarise. Personally, I’m a fan. I feel his characters, whilst having slightly chibi-esque features, scream comic book superhero. The line’s change in tone is reflected in a beautifully bright and colourful book too and this was like a spoonful of lemon sorbet after the dense dark meat that was Siege. Read Full Review

Marvel usually relies on Romita when it wants to push a comic book out there. Romita delivers, of course, thinking ahead, this may not be a wise decision as we know Romita will probably leave in about six issues and the artists left to pick up the slack, while probably good will probably drive the sales of this series down. Wouldnt it be better to build this series from the ground up with a regular artistic team committed to stick around for a while instead of borrowing a popular name to jump start a new franchise? "Avengers" #1 does exactly what it needs to: heralds the beginning of "The Heroic Age" with the reformation of the Avengers. Bendis's writing has the appropriate weight to it and Romita on art helps a great deal in getting the epic feeling across. Despite all the fun I obviously had picking this issue apart, I had a great time reading it. The heroes are back on the bright side, where they belong, and battling an old school villain thats actually worth the Avengers time. Overall, Avengers is another solid addition to Marvel's Heroic Age. While it may take a while to establish an identity that sets this series apart from Bendis' work on New Avengers, this first issue is certainly a step in the right direction. Avengers #1 was a fun start to this new Avengers book. While this issue had some obvious defects Bendis turned in a solid effort as he delivers a story fitting of the Avengers. This issue was also very new reader friendly. So if you are looking for the classic Avengers or a more positive comic give Avengers #1 a try because this issue does capture the classic Avengers feel especially with the return of Kang. I want to give this book more just because I love these characters so much, but Bendis is just too prolific these days, as is Romita, and the quality of the work being produced by both is plummeting. Having a small core of creators steering entire lines has worked well for both DC and Marvel over the last few years but I think it's time to let some fresh blood tackle the meat of the books while the likes of Bendis take more of an editorial and plotting role, and less of a hands-on approach. That said I will be picking up the next issue, if only to find out exactly what the Hulks role in all this pans out to be! Read Full Review
