Amazing Mary Jane #3

Williams has settled-in to the milieu of Mary Jane with this issue in a way that feels both smart and sophisticated. She manages this without compromising action and pacing. The series is beginning to reach some of its potential with this issue. A slightly more detailed look at Hollywood in the Marvel Universe in the course of production, these first few issues could go a long way towards making this series something original AND accomplished. The Amazing Mary Jane is all together anything but amazing thus far. Three issues in and MJ has done next to nothing. I'm beginning to think this series was done just to sell variant covers to collectors because the story is severely lacking when pertaining to the title character. Read Full Review

I thought this was fun, overall. I especially liked the introduction of the new crew. I didn't expect to see Screwball in this as she's... lame. But I guess it would make sense that she's the new production manager. And Master Matrix, I wasn't entirely sure was a canonical character after Spider-Man/Deadpool's ending, but here he is, still trying so hard. This is a definite improvement over issue two. Oh also, Weird Science Marvel Comics is wrong in their review. Mary Jane does plenty, to the point where she's almost too heroic. Think Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #11, but maybe even more Mary Jane than that.

The lack of praise for this book baffles me. It's exactly the kind of out-of-the-box story you'd think would resonate with the turtleneck crowd. I don't love it, but it's entertaining and different and FUN.

This issue is a solid "silly movie set shenanigans" montage, and it mercifully restores agency to MJ and gets her a little further out of Mysterio's orbit. But nothing in this or the prior issues gives me much confidence in the second half's ability to deliver a cohesive, satisfying conclusion.
