Amazing Mary Jane #2

Williams and Gomez are playing with a really unique series that might have a charming opportunity for success in the current era. With entertainment news traveling as quickly as it does, the average movie fan knows a lot more about filmmaking now than ever before. Superhero films are some of the most successful movies there are. Despite my new interest in Mysterio, Im left scratching my head. Williams does a good job showing MJ as a strong, capable woman (as she should be) who has no problem facing challenges thrown her way (which she shouldnt). She is thrown into the plot of someone elses drama instead of a story about her own development or struggle. The Amazing Mary Jane #2 (Williams, Lopez, Gomez) is an enjoyable story with well-done art, but as Mary Janes first miniseries, it feels like it could be Mysterios first mini instead. While the cliffhanger does provide a slight glimmer of hope, it can't save this issue. MJ is a truly great character, but unfortunately doesn't get a chance to shine in her own book. This series should really be called "The Mystery of Mysterio's Missing Self-Esteem". Because it's been ALL about him so far. Read Full Review

I still think this series is caught between trying to do a sincere melodrama and trying to satirize one at the same time. It doesn't help that the "Hollywood backlot intrigue" genre is way, WAY harder than it looks. And I think the key criticism raised in the Weird Science review deserves more attention: After MJ complained last issue about her movie character being a mere satellite to the male protagonist, she spends this entire issue orbiting Mysterio. While it might be possible to earn some irony points off the juxtaposition, I don't think this script actually does anything along those lines.
