Comic book fans, or fans of crime thrillers, have a fantastic new story to follow with this first issue. The writing is sharp and the art is a perfect moody balance for a noir story worth checking out. While Dick Tracy as a character may be nearly 100 years old, that doesn't mean he's done solving crimes and luckily for comic book readers, many aren't tired of reading about adventures from the classic detective. I'm love what I see thus far. This is classic Dick Tracy with a pretty new paint job and some upgraded parts. The characters are fleshed out and explored, but not in an exhausting way. Everyone grows through action, not tons of exposition. There are little to know narrative boxes which is great. Dialogue and actions drive the story. It's very cinematic in that way. It's my opinion that the art of any Dick Tracy book is the cornerstone of its success. Geraldo Borges and Mark Englert are off to a great start. Mad Cave Studios getting the rights to Dick Tracy was a big deal. Assembling this team of creatives only raised expectations even further. The property went to the right hands as the biggest honor to Gould's vision is the care and reverence the creators show with a faithful version that doesn't hold back. DICK TRACY #1 has a great murder mystery at its heart, strong detective noir crime vibes, which is what appears the creators were going for. You get all the classic elements of the original source material for Dick Tracy, and the ending is pretty strong. Okay, so your individual mileage on this one will most certainly vary depending on your prior affection for Chester Gould's iconic creation, but if you're looking for a dark, hardboiled detective comic from a creative team that is clearly having an absolute blast, you could certainly do a lot worse than picking this new series up. Now this is a comic I know I can get into. Over the years I've collected a lot of old comics reprinting old strips and have seen a lot of the old Ralph Byrd movies as well as the legendary 1990 film. And like it I can see it was made by a true fan wanting to bring Dick Tracy back in a new way while staying true to what he was meant to be from the start nearly a century ago. This comic is a crime drama. Something comics like Batman have strayed away from being, mainly because DC's leftist staff believes Crime isn't so bad after all and that law and order are the real bad guys. That's why Batman fights maniacs whose only motive anymore is personal vendettas against him. I've never read anything by Segura before, so this is a splendid introd uction to his work. Making a Dick Tracy comic can assure something great if it's done right. And he's done just that. Tracy is, like Batman known for his large and very unique rogues gallery. Featuring them at their baddest is a great way to add to the intrigue. Segura also chose a great starting villain with Flattop, who is probably Tracy's most legendary foe. I already hope to see him menacing Tracy more in the future. It's also a great start by following the original plot, which is trying to solve the murder of Tess Trueheart's father. Tess is also a fine example of the woman of that time trying to make it in what was still a man's world. I know a comic with potential when I see one, and this is definitely one. It features a classic crime fighting icon at his finest and still determined to prove crime doesn't pay. The theme Chester Gould himself wanted to make very clear in his original strip 9 decades ago. Any fan of Dick Tracy or exciting crime fighting comics shouldn't miss this. more

The iconic detective is back! I distinctly remember watching the 90s movie & the bright yellow coat when I was a kid but was never really exposed to the character further, so I was pumped to hear Alex Segura & Michael Moreci working on this new project. The writing duo presents a classic origin story while retaining the essence that I’m sure longtime fans will love & new fans, like me, will immediately be drawn into. This fresh take offered something for everyone. I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the gritty, noir-inspired narrative & visuals. I fell down a Wikipedia rabbit hole & was shocked how many references to the OG comics made it into just this first issue. The creative team has struck a perfect balance, crafting a story that ’s both nostalgic & accessible. Geraldo Borges’ artwork is a standout, bringing the dark streets to life w/ a level of detail that’s both haunting & beautiful. Mark Englert’s colors perfectly complement the illustrations, adding depth & atmosphere to every panel. The opening diner sequence immediately set the stakes for the book’s visual identity. Segura & Moreci’s script is suspenseful & engaging. As a huge Sam Spade & Philip Marlowe fan, Dick Tracy #1 was everything I could have hoped for in a detective story! more

Not particularly sure what all the hype is about to be frank. The art was pretty good and fitted the character well and the script rattled along nicely but the dialogue was way to contrived for my taste. I love nostalgia and I get it was set post war during a particularly violent gang time in American history but the tone of the dialogue makes it difficult to really enjoy it.
